Notes for J
OHN KILPEN SPENCER, SR:
John K. Sr. (Pop) used to tell stories of his youth about living on a "Plantation" in Nelson County near Appomattox, during the Civil War. He said that he could hear the guns on the morning of the surrender of Lee at Appomattox Courthouse. Once the Yankees had been camping on a nearby hill on the Plantation and moved on the next morning. Pop and a Negro lad went to the site to see if anything had been left. Suddenly, a Yankee soldier returned and they watched from their hiding place while he shot the horse that he was leading. The horse was not badly wounded, just thirsty, and wandered to the stream to drink. They boys found that the horse had been shot through the mouth and it could not drink. They plugged the hole with corn cobs and took the horse home for Pop's father to care for. It became their best horse, called "Corncob"

John Kilpen Spencer, Sr raised all of his children on the "Old Home Place" which was adjacent to Sweet Briar College.

In 1902 the family moved to 1122 Monroe Street, Lynchburg, VA. so the children could have a better education. Pop bought a store. He had horses, cows and lumber. It was a large store facing 12th street and they lived upstairs. His wife and daughter Alice died of Typhoid Fever in 1905. The daughter had gone to Roanoke to visit a cousin and contracted the disease. Her mother Sarah Alice went to take care of her and also got Typhoid Fever. Both died in the summer of 1905, leaving Pop to take care of his family alone.

His daughter Bertie Mae later named one of the many hotels in Washington D.C. which she owned after her Father. "The John KIlpen". He lived with Bertie Mae in his old age. He was a delightful old southern gentleman!

  Notes for JOHN RYAN:
Bertie was a remarkable and sometimes difficult woman. Her mother died when she was quite young and she took on the responsibility of her siblings. She attended Business College and went to work as a Secretary for the head of the N &WRailroad in Roanoke VA. during WWI. She married Waren West and he went to serve in WWI too. He returned with several problems unknown. During their marriage she was pregnant and lost twins. She was unable to have any children after that. She divorced Waren and married Mr. Gillespie. He died of a heart attack. They were living in Washing ton D.C. and she was the secretary for a very wealthy real estate man in D.C. After Mr Gillespie's death she invested al of his insurance money in Property and Blue Chip Stocks. She became quite wealthy herself; owning a large home in NW Washington, a summer home on the South River at Annapolis MD, a huge horse farm which later became Dulles Airport. She also owned several hotels in Washington. She took care of her brothers and sisters and their children in many financial ways. She was a very devoted business woman and enjoyed the company of men not women. She owned a 45 foot yacht which she could handle like any man. In her 40-60's she maintained a relationship with a man Weber Knight, a Vice President of Pittsburgh Steel CO. They co habitated long before that was excepted. That relationship ended and she married John Ryan, who enjoyed the freedom of her money. I think she was willing to let him use her money in order to have a permanent man in her life.
She introduce my parents to each other and during WWII, I and my mother lived with her for about 3 years while My father was serving in the Navy. My Mother had lived with her in Washington after college while she was working at the Congressional cafeteria. Bertie was not always easy to live with, She was demanding and moody but often very generous.

OHN KILPEN SPENCER, JR.:
John Kilpen's, (known as Jack) mother and sister died of Typhoid fever when he was 9 years old. They lived in Amherst Co on property that is located next to Sweet Briar College. John's father moved the children into Lynchburg during the school year and hired a housekeeper so that that they could have a good education. His father owned a general store in Lynchburg and they lived above the store during school months. They also owned and operated the farm in Amherst. John Sr. lost a great deal of money from the store during the depression because he gave people credit when they couldn't pay their bills. He later open a transfer business which his son John (Jack) ran and and later owned. All of the children of John Sr. were educated after High School except John who had to stay and take care of his father and younger children. He always was interested in education and encouraged his own children to complete college. He had a quick mind and wonderful use of language. He broke away from the local Presbyterian Church in Lexington and started his own "Grace Presbyterian Church". He was very active in the Gideon society. He was demanding and strict with his children but fun and boisterous with his grandchildren. As a young man he was very social and fun loving. His wife was very religious and she encouraged his participation with the church.
