Click here: Grandmother Catherine Weatherford married in 1811 Charlotte VA to John C Wright

The archives of Virginia are found on usgenweb.com and have Catherine and John's marriage posted as 1811 and her father recorded as Charles.

Census records of 1810 show a Patsy Weatherford with 3 daughters  and a nearby younger Charles who could have been the brother of Catherine.

In all of my research nobody has ever mentioned Patsy.

Catherine's father Charles was an Indian Trader and traveled constantly and possibly had many other children with other wives or women.

Father of Charles was Martin who migrated into Georgia.  Martin's wife is listed as Mary Half Blood.

Charles was in and out of Georgia many times and into Alabama.

Patsy was probably the wife of Charles and the mother of Catherine and was most likely native american.  Catherine and John Wright had a daughter named Catherine who married my grandfather Hiram Little and it was their son John Wright Little born in 1843 who said they were Cherokee by blood.  He also said they refused indian land allotments.  The Little families were in the Kentucky History for about 100 years and Hiram's nephew Lucius Powhatan Little was a famous author and judge of Kentucky.  Hiram's brother Douglass had married the sister of Catherine Wright, Martha.  Now why would Martha name a son Powhatan?

Catherine and John Wright may have had sons who also migrated into Kentucky, finding a Phillip Wright on one census beside them.

Knowing that Catherine Weatherford Wright was of indian blood, we know very little about her husband, John C. Wright.

*
Other researchers find our Charles Weatherford living by famous Cherokee names like Bryant Ward and John Vann.

About 1757, Martin, John, William and Charles Weatherford headed to Augusta, GA. John supposedly stayed in S.C. During the Revolutionary War, they formed the Augusta Loyalist Militia, which had about 1100 Tories. When Augusta fell in the 1780's, 250 persons from various counties, including Charles, Martin, James, John, Charles and others were put on trial and ordered out of Augusta. An act of Confiscation and Banishment in Augusta on 4 May 1782 from the State Archives Ref.: Candler, Revolutionary Records of Ga. Vol. 1 (1769-1782) page 386. "Be, and they are hereby declared to be banished from this State forever" 60 days in which to go, otherwise, jail or expedition "beyond the Seas to some of the British Kings dominion." Martin went to Florida, then to the Bahamas, where there are a number of Weatherford's. William went to the Florida Keys and Charles went to Alabama and then to St. Augustine, FL. John was the odd duck, he was in the War but was in the Continental Army. Martin's grandson became the Creek Indian known as Red Eagle. Martin and his family moved to the Bahama's.
Note: Martin's land that was confiscated was five miles north of Augusta, Ga. In the 1970's, Govenor Telfair lived on the land.

Charles was a trader among the Creek Indians, shown as a "white", married to a woman of the Creek Nation.
Charles was granted 150 acres of land near Augusta, Georgia on December 7, 1762. This grant of land could have been either from military service, or, granted because of his having a Creek wife.
I know Charles served in James Edward Powells' 2nd Troop of Georgia Rangers from October 1, 1762, to April 1, 1764. So, he could have come into the land either way.

His property was bounded on one side by that of Bryant Ward, a white resident among the Cherokee, born in Scotland in 1735, who was married to Nancy Ward, better known as "Ghigau", meaning " Beloved Woman". Nancy was a very prominent person among the Cherokee, and revered by the Cherokee, so much so, that the Cherokee leaders held her words/ advice in high regard. Unusual for the time because generally, leadership decisions were left to the men, and women were not given prominence in decisions that affected the Nation. Therefore, Charles Weatherford had a very important neighbor in Nancy and Bryant Ward.
On another side of Charles' property, was John Vann Jr., his father being trader John Vann (white), his mother being a Cherokee woman. John Jr. was half Cherokee. The Vann's being a most prominent and important family among the Cherokee, some of which were leaders of the Cherokee Nation.
Another side of Charles property was held by Martin Weatherford, Charles' father.

John C Wright married Catherine G Weatherford, January 05, 1811, Charlotte, Virginia - the daughter of Charles......

My findings thus far reveal only one Charles Weatherford at that time, so if his daughter was old enough to marry, she must have been born about 1790 so Charles had to be born around 1750 - 1760.

This Charles had to be the one written about who's mother was Mary Half Blood and most likely the same one who fathered William Weatherford, known as Chief Red Eagle.  This theory was also written by Lucius Powhatan Little and his daughter Laura Simmons Little Hawes and I cannot disprove it.  Their family charts indicate that Polly Jones was Catherine's mother and she connected to a Thomas Jones of Bermuda Hundred in Henrico County, Virginia. Thomas Jones came from England and settled on the James River in the early 1600s near Chief Powhatan.

There is no doubt these families were well traveled back then, even on horseback, Charles Weatherford could have gone back and forth between the states and between his unknown wives, then again we do not know for certain that his daughter was even born in Virginia.

It is also possible that there was a band of Weatherford brothers who all had sons named Charles, or William so it is quite a challenge to prove.  There was a family of Weatherfords in South Carolina 1790 and a family in Charlotte VA 1810 but they could be all connected.

If our Charles was a mixed blood, Scotch Indian Trader, if his father was really from Scotland, since some believe that his father was born in Virginia,  he could have traveled the south east and had several wives and children, including the Chief Red Eagle/ William Weatherford born in 1780.

1810 Charlotte VA census shows a Patsy Weatherford with children who could be the Polly mentioned above.

Catherine Weatherford Wright surely had several siblings and many Weatherfords migrated into Kentucky

John and Catherine Wright had three daughters, Catherine, Martha, Mary.

Catherine Wright married Hiram Little and she died young leaving children to sister Martha Wright Little, and her husband Douglas.

In 1850 Catherine Weatherford and John Wright were living with their daughter Mary Ann Wright Waltrip and her family.  Mary and husband died young leaving children to her sister Martha.

In 1860 John Wright has died and his widow is  living with daughter Martha Ann Wright and husband Douglass Little, caring for Mary's children and Catherine's children.  Martha's son Lucius Powhatan Little is in this household.

Some granddaughters were named Georgia so we can easily suspect that Catherine's middle initial was for Georgia

Notes for MARTIN WEATHERFORD:
Martin had a patent on 600 acres on Laton's Creek. Laton's Creek is a branch of Buckhorn Creek in Mecklenburg Co. This is found in Vol. 5, pa 450 on 9 Nov 1753.
Martin was in Va. then Ga. then Florida for about a year when the Spanish took Florida, they headed to the Bahamas.
Some of this was info. that was posted by Allyson Lee.
Notes for MARY HALF BLOOD:
Mary was of Indian descent. She was supposedly what you would call a half blood. She moved with her family from Virginia to Augusta, Georgia around 1757. Her name or middle name may have been Jane?

Notes for ISABELLA ARCHER:
This is an assumption only at this point, but my assumption is that it may have been a niece that had married Isabellas' son William Martin, since her name was Isabella Archer too but the birthdates are within reason to be a niece I would say. You may want to do further research here. When Martin married Isabella they had lived in the Bahamas. Many of their descendants still reside there.

At this time, Catherine's first name will need further research. My questioning this is because Martin and his second wife also named a daughter Catherine and her nickname was Caty. Now Caty MAY have been named after her older half-sister, I don't have the answer at this time.

Next, my question is, could Martin's wife, the mother of Charles, have been Indian? All we find about her is her name "Jane". Two of the most common "white" names that were given to Indian woman by the white's was Jane and Mary. Such names made the Indian women seem more "civilized" to whites, and were also easier to pronounce than their original Indian names.
I am not saying that Jane WAS Indian, only that there is a good possibility that she could have been. Traders among the Indians almost always took Indian wives, for it gave them better standing with the Indians as a whole, and they were more likely to be trusted, and confided in, if they were connected to the Indian peoples.
This gave the trader the ability to hear and see what the general population of white people were not allowed, such as the possibility of war against the white settlers, advance warnings of things that would have been important to the white settlers safety, movements of settlements of Indians, the when and where of the important leaders of the Indians.
It is also important to note that as a trader, Charles would have moved around a lot through the vast wilderness, and had he had a white wife, this would have made it difficult to maintain his household and be away among the Indians for extended periods of time.
As the Indians often picked up and moved with the seasons to different areas of their country, due to hunting game, and forage for their animals, it would have been very hard for a white wife to locate him, whereas, if he was married to an Indian woman, he would always know where the Indian people were and they would have means of locating him if need be. The Indian grapevine was extensive and quite efficient.
If Charles mother was of Indian ancestry, then Charles would have inherited Indian blood from her, as would any of his siblings who were born to Martin and Jane.
By 1780 Charles was married to Sehoy Tate. Sehoy can get a little confusing due to the fact that her mother was also named Sehoy.
Lachlan McGillivray was a trader among the Creek Indians. He was born about 1725 in Scotland and came to Georgia in 1736 as an indentured servant of John McIntosh.
In 1744 Lachlin received a license to trade among the Indians, both the Creek, and later he was licensed to trade among the Choctaw.
By 1764 he was the owner of a plantation called Vale Royal, near Augusta.
Lalchlin McGillivray married Sehoy Marchand, the daughter of a French officer at Fort Toulouse and a woman of Creek blood. Sehoy Marchand's mother was referred to as " a Creek woman of the Wind Clan", a "sister to the chief Red Shoes", and a "principal woman of the Creek Nation".
Historian Thomas Woodward recorded that Sehoy Marchand's mother was a full blood Tuskegee, who married trader Malcom McPherson, and had a daughter named Sehoy. Sehoy Marchand McPherson later married Lachlan McGillivray.
..
While most sources state that Sehoy McPherson Tate Weatherford, was a sister to the Creek Indian Chief Alexander McGillivray, she was in fact, a half sister to Alexander, and Alexander himself made the statement that while they had the same father, they had different mothers. Alexander also mentions cousins named McPherson.
.
It is interesting that Alexander McGillivray was married to the daughter of trader Jacob Moniac. Jacob Moniac was a Creek trader, originally from Holland. He was married to a Creek woman. He had one daughter who married Alexander McGillivray, another who married the Chickasaw Indian chief William Colbert, one other daughter married a Josiah Francis, a Creek, better known as "The Prophet".
.
It is interesting because, from information that I have, I find that Charles Weatherford's daughter Elizabeth ( Betsy), married Samuel Moniac, a son of Jacob Moniac. Samuel was also called Tokkes Harjo. Elizabeth later married a Riley.
The same information shows that Charles's son, William, Red Eagle," was married to three wives; Mary Moniac, Sapoth Thanie, and Mary Stiggins.
John D. Weatherford, son of Charles married a Creek woman. They had at lest one child, a daughter. No names given for these women unless I accidentally missed them, but this daughter married a man named Kellum. I have not investigated further on John or wife and daughter.
Charles daughter Rossannah (Roseanna) married a Captain J. W. Shomo. He is reportedly a Creek, but I have not found anything further on him . I do have other materials I can check through later though just to see if anything turns up on him.
But I find it interesting that the Moniac name keeps popping up so many times. Mkes me want to dig more and see how these people managed to get so interwoven with each other. Things like that fascinate me.
I also have some info that says Charles had another daughter ( Suzie/Susan) who married a Sizemore. I have found an Alexander Sizemore, a Creek Indian, born in 1839, the son of William Sizemore. In 1860 Alexander Sizemore was living in the household of Charles Weatherford in Monroe County, Alabama, and who married "into the Weatherford family". I have to say that this is pretty good evidence that Suzie/Susan Weatherford married Alexander Sizemore.
William Sizemore (father of Alexander) was a Creek Indian, his wife was Parey Collins, of Creek blood.

my great great great grandfather
Doctor Hiram Lucius Little was born in Kentucky, son of Jonas Little and Betsy
Douglass on Feb 8, 1821.  He was the grandson of Rev War Patriot Captain George
Little and Mary of Scotland.  Hiram married Nancy Catherine Wright in 1840
Kentucky.  She was the daughter of John C Wright and Catherine G Weatherford
and granddaughter of Charles Weatherford of Charlotte Virginia.  Catherine bore
him several children and passed away in 1853.  Hiram and some of his children
moved to Meridian Texas, where he married Rebecca Isabella Adams and had
several more children, including Hiram L Little Jr.

Dr Hiram Little is buried at Meridian Cemetery and it shows he was a Mason. He
died 7/18/1876

Hiram and Catherine had a son namd John Wright Little.

John Wright Little born 12/4/1843 Shepherdsville, Bullitt, Kentucky was the son
of Doctor Hiram Lucius Little and Nancy Catherine Wright.

John Wright Little was married to Mary Catherine Crigler, daughter of Abraham
Crigler and Mary Catherine Roby.  John's daughter Lattie Cedonia Little Coonfield is my great grandmother.  Lattie married Benjamin Coonfield and they had my grandma Luella Coonfield Cochran.  Dad talked of her having dark brown eyes and long black hair that she could sit on.

It is told that John's wife died in Kentucky and he moved on to Arkansas, and is buried somewhere on a mountain top in Marble, Arkansas.  He told his children they were native americans and needed to move, and be white if they wanted good jobs and land.  His daughter Lattie said she was halfblood Cherokee

Charlotte County was constituted by Act of 10 November 1764, dividing it from Lunenburg County. The first court for Charlotte County was held in March 1765.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~vacharlo/indexcha.htm

Lunenburg County formed 1746 from Brunswick County

Hugh Dean, Esq., Wits:
Knew Claiman;. Says he was Loyal from the first. Remembers his coming to New York. Understood he had been driven from his home & gone thro. great Persecutions & Troubles. He had been attacked in his own house & shot at. Is perfectly satisfied as to his Loyalty. He understood that when he was attacked in his own house, he was first taken Prisoner, but shot 2 of the persons who took him & made his escape from them. Knew that he was possessed of considerable landed Property, but did not knew it particularly. He fancies he had large Landed Property, the. he might also have Incumbrances upon them, as he had been a great speculator in Lands.
Knows his houses were very well furnished. His wife took Part with the Rebels. She is now in Possession of one of his houses. Does not know what is become of the rest of his Property. His Wife & Children are in the States.
The eldest Son agrees with the Mother in Principles, the rest of the family agree in their Principles with the Father.
Claimant was a member of the Assembly before the war, & Witness considered him as a respectable Character.
