Descendants of William Perdue, Sr.

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 PERDUE, SR. was born Abt. 1767, and died 1825 in Jefferson County, GA. He married JUDAH THOMPSON. She died 1847 in Jefferson County, GA.

Notes for W
ILLIAM PERDUE, SR.:
William and Judah T. Perdue were the first Perdue's shown on the tax records of Warren co., GA in 1793. The following year that part of Warren County became Jefferson County.

Quote by great-grandson, John Thomas Perdue, when celebrating his 93rd birthday. Printed in Column # 22, February 14, 1980, of "Ancestoring Through Georgia Newspapers".

"My great-grandfather, Mr. William Perdue, came over from Ireland to settle in Ashville, North Carolina, during the first part of the 17th(?) century. He later came to settle in Georgia, in what is now known as Jefferson Co., GA. My ancestors had to wait three days for the water to go down so they could cross the Savannah River. He brought with him his seven sons and two daughters. He lived to be 96 years old, his elder son lived to be 106 yrs. old."

The above ages would seem to be incorrect because the eldest William to reside in Jefferson Co., GA lived only to 65 yrs. Records do not indicate any of his sons lived to be 106 years old.\\

William Perdue, Sr. received a grant of 300 acres on Reedy Creek in Jefferson County, GA (formerly Warren County). He moved there before 1795. Jefferson County was formed from Warren and Burke Counties in 1796.

Notes for J
UDAH THOMPSON:
Judah was a charter member of the church that became Ways Baptist Church, organized August 16, 1817, on Brushy Creek. The following of her children were charter members also: James and wife Mary Elizabeth (Montgomery) Perdue, Judah (Perdue) Whitehead, and Dicey (Perdue) Beasley. The first building was a log structure. It later served as a school. The log building was replaced in 1850 with a fine edifice which was still standing in 1977 with an active congregation and may still be standing with an active congregation. This place is about 10/12 miles from the Perdue homestead on Reedy Creek.

Another church had its beginnings with the Perdue family, Mt. Horeb Baptist Church. William & Judah's daughter, Leveniah (Perdue) Brady and her husband lived on the south side of Reedy Creek on lands of her brother, John Perdue. Their youngest son, John Brady, died August 1847, and a noted Baptist preacher, Elisha Perryman, of Warren County, GA was summoned to conduct the funeral. Burial was near their house. From that emotional moment, the Rev. Elisha Perryman did not cease his efforts until a house of worship was built and a congregation was constituted in 1850. The house of worship was built near the John Brady burial site. Later, a larger, more permanent building was needed and a church house was erected about one mile south of the first building. This 1870 structure was well maintained and was not remodeled or enlarged until the 1950's.

The above information was taken largely from Leroy Lewis, Perdue descendant.
