Swett Family of Massachusetts
Generation 1
1. JOHN SWETT. He was born Abt. 1590 in County Norfolk,
England [1]. He married Phebe Unknown. Immigration on May
18, 1642 from England [2]. He died
on June 13, 1652 in Newbury, Essex, MA [3].
Notes for
John Swett:
John Swett was admitted to the freedom of Massachusetts Colony,
May 18, 1642, and was one of the early settlers of Newbury, Essex County, MA.
John brought his wife and four sons with him. He lived on the first lot east of
the old landing, on the north side of Parker's River (Swett Genealogy, Everett
S. Stackpole).
Ten years after arriving in America, he died June 13, 1652. The
monument erected on the lower green at Newbury to memorialize the first
settlers does not bear the name of John Swett, but that of Stephen, his son; it
being then supposed that Stephen Swett was the first one of the family to
settle in Newbury (Swett Genealogy, Everett S. Stackpole).
John's wife, Phebe, died, a widow, May 6, 1665. Many genealogy
researchers, including Stackpole, reported Sarah Larimore (born 1584 in
Wymondham, Norfolk, England, died December 11, 1650 in Newbury, Essex, MA) as
John's first wife. This widespread assumption is however not supported by the
Vital Records. So, there is a strong indication that Phebe (maiden name
unknown) was his only wife and the mother of his children.
Some genealogists report John's father as Richard Swett, who was
born about 1546, England, died August 21, 1581 Barnstable, Devon, England.
However, it is not supported by any known Vital Records.
There are several generations between John Swett and his ancestor,
Guy Swete (a little over 100 years). Guy Swete fought for the Yorks in the War
of the Roses in England. The Yorks ousted Henry VI in 1461. Edward IV of York
replaced him. Henry VI regained the throne in 1470, only to be deposed again in
1471. Edward IV became king for the second time. Edward IV granted Guy a coat
of arms and crest in 1473 for his assistance in the War of the Roses. The
linkage between Guy Swete and John Swett of Newbury is substantiated by the
silver flagon (pitcher) given to the Marblehead Church by the heirs of Joseph
Swett, Jr. (1689-1745) of Marblehead, Massachusetts, great-grandson of John
Swett of Newbury. The silver flagon was engraved with the coat of arms granted
to Guy Swete. The names of Joseph Swett, Jr. (1689-1745) and his heirs, and the
date May 7, 1759 are engraved on the bottom of the flagon (Ben Swett - Swett
Genealogist). Photos of the flagon are viewable by clicking on Swete - Sweet - Swett” COAT OF ARMS”.
Note the spelling variations of surnames. It appears that,
historically, the English language was used flexibly and informally. Not only
did sweat, sweet, swete, swett, and swet (and other variations) have
interchangeable meanings, but also were pronounced both ways: "sweet"
(the flavor) and "sweat" (perspiration). For example, the name of
Joseph Swett, Jr. (1689-1745) of Marblehead, great-grandson of John Swett of
Newbury, was spelled Swett, Sweat, Sweet, and Sweett in various church records
and other original documents. Also, it is interesting that in A DICTIONARY OF
SURNAMES, Swett, Swete, Sweet, & other variations have the common meaning
of "a popular person who is pleasant and agreeable". For a further
explanation, go to “Ben
Swett’s Genealogy Site” (click on "The spelling of
English surnames").

Notes for
Daniel Swett:
Daniel was born, raised, and married in MA. Also, he fathered his
first two children in MA. At an early age, he completed an apprenticeship for a
mechanical trade (Daniel's obituary).
When he was 23, he moved to Georgetown, Washington DC where his next
four children were born. His occupation
in DC is unknown (perhaps in commerce - Georgetown was a huge maritime
port). After 8 years in DC (1828-1836),
he relocated his family to Vicksburg, MS where his last five children were born
(he and his family were listed on the 1840 census for Warren County, MS).
Daniel became a wealthy businessman and community leader in
Vicksburg, MS. He owned and operated a large hardware store on the northwest
corner of Washington St. and Crawford St., a couple blocks from the Mississippi
River (Warren County Land Deed Records). Vicksburg newspaper advertisements
list the store's name as "Daniel Swett & Co." His residence was
attached to the back of the store (1866 Vicksburg City Directory). Parts of the
buildings that housed his business and home are still standing in the
Vicksburg's Historical District (Vicksburg historians reported that the building
had several rebuilds/renovations after the tornado of 1953 and sometime later,
a fire). To view a photo of the store as it stands today and a store
advertisement, click on Daniel Swett’s Hardware Store. Also, Daniel
owned a summer home and farm outside of the city (Swett - Genealogy notes from
Vicksburg).
Daniel was also a gun dealer and sold the guns out of his hardware
store business. It has been reported that Jefferson Davis's wife carried a
Swett Derringer in her purse ("Southern Derringers of the Mississippi
Valley" by Turner Kirkland, page 69).
The 1860 census reported the value of Daniel's real estate and
personal estate at $73,000, which was equivalent to $1,314,000 in year 2000
currency. Remarkably, he maintained his wealth during and after the Civil War
despite a depressed economy and the freedom of his slaves (1860 tax records
listed him as owning 17 slaves). However, in the 1870 census, there was a shift
of worth from his real estate to personal estate and an occupational change to
farmer, which indicates that he likely sold his hardware business.
Daniel accompanied his son, Charles, and other Southern leaders on
an exploratory trip to British Honduras in hopes of finding a suitable place
for their families to immigrate to after the Civil War. This trip was well
documented in Charles Swett's book "A Trip to British Honduras and to San
Pedro, Republic of Honduras". To read Charles's book, go to the "Google Books" web site.
Daniel's cause of death was gangrene. He died at his residence in
Warren County, MS. To view his tombstone, go to the Virtual Cemetery Web Site. To read his obituary, look under
