Williams Family of PA, IN, and OH
Generation
1
1. GEORGE S. WILLIAMS. He was born
Abt. 1816 in PA [1, 2, 3]. He married Hannah Pryor Abt. 1847 [6]. He married Mary Unknown Abt. 1860 [5]. Occupation 1860 (Farmer & Courier)
[2, 4].
Notes for George S. Williams:
The 1880 census lists George's
father being born in PA and mother being born in Wustemburg,
Germany.
George's real estate was valued
at $400 on the 1850 & 1860 census. And his personal estate was valued at
$200 on the 1860 census. His net worth of $600 would be equivalent to $10,800
in year 2000 currency; however, this may be low because the value of land has
appreciated more than inflation.
The 1850 census reported George
S. (34) married to Hannah (24) and having one son, George (1) (his middle name
was Albert). The 1860 reported George S. (43) married to Mary (21) within the
year, and having two sons, Albert (11) and Addison (9). The 1880 census reports
George (63) as widowed/divorced and having three children, Albert (31), Mary
(26), Hannah (24). Since the girls, Mary and Hannah,
were not living with George and Mary (newlyweds) in 1860, it is likely they
were living with their divorced mother, Hannah.
Also, since Mary was not living with George S. in 1880, it can be assumed
that she had either died or divorced him.
HANNAH PRYOR. She was born Abt. 1826 in OH [1].
Notes for Hannah Pryor:
Hannah's birthplace is uncertain.
George Albert William's, her son, death certificate and the 1910 census report it
as Holland. The 1850 and 1930 censuses report it as Ohio. And the 1880 census
reports her children's mother's birthplace as England. Part of the confusion might be between the
birthplaces of George S. Williams' two wives.
The 1920 census reports both Hannah
parents being born in NC.
GEORGE S. WILLIAMS & HANNAH PRYOR. They had
4 children.

Notes for George Albert Williams:
George tried several times to
enlist in the Civil War Union Army in his early teens. But, after the Army
found him to be underage, he was discharged. Finally, towards the end of the
war he re-enlisted and saw active duty. The 1910 census reports him as a Civil
War Union Army veteran. Also, George and Mary (as a widow) received a Civil War
Pension.
Family members report that George
had a severe case of asthma. This prompted him to relocate a lot in attempts to
find a better environment for his illness. Census records and his children's
birth records indicate that the family moved back and forth between OH, IN, and
FL.

Notes for
Mary Ann Phipps:
The 1910 census reports her year
of birth as 1868; but, the 1920 census reports her birth year as 1865. Her
death certificate list her year of birth as 1864.
The 1910 and 1920 census has George's
wife name listed as Mary A.
However, death certificates of
her children, Edna and Charlie, lists her name as Georgia Ann. Georgia may have
been a nickname.
The 1910 census lists Mary's
parents as being born NC.

Notes for Charlie Francis
Williams:
His death certificate reports his
birth year as 1897; however, the 1910 census lists him as being 11, which would
make his birth year about 1898 since his birth month was September. At the time
of his death he lived with his sister, Edna, at 11285 Dunham Rd., Hartland, MI.
He was buried December 1971, Highland Township Cemetery, Oakland County, MI.

born on May 16, 1899 in Lawrenceville, IN [7, 8, 10, 11, 15]. She married Charles LeRoy Swett in June 1924 [15]. She
died on March 31, 1973 in Howell, Livingston County, MI [8, 19]. Burial on April 3, 1973 in Highland Township Cemetery, Oakland

Notes for Edna Gertrude Williams:
Edna was engaged to marry a man
of whom her brothers disapproved. As a joke, her brothers put a personal ad in
the paper requesting a suitor for her. Charles answered the ad and the rest was
history.
Edna and Charles had a few rocky
years early in their marriage (the years between Rev. Charles R.'s and Earl's
birth). She moved to Ohio to live with her parents during their separation. It
seems that Charles was quite the gambler and pawned Edna's wedding ring to get
gambling funds. After reforming from gambling, he bought Edna a replacement
wedding ring, which had a turquoise stone. These rocky years are documented in
telegrams sent by Charles to Edna.
At the time of Edna’s death she
lived at 11285 Dunham Rd., Hartland, MI. To view Edna's tombstone, go to the Virtual
Cemetery Web Site.
