Bowman Family of VA, OH, KY, & MI

Generation 1

1.         AARON P. BOWMAN  He was born on September 20, 1820 in VA [1, 2, 3, 4]. He married Melissa Squires on February 4, 1847 in Scioto County, OH [7]. Occupation 1860 (Furnace Laborer - fire brick) [3]. Occupation (2) 1870 (Farmer) [4]. He died on October 2, 1875 in Lawrence County, OH [1].

Notes for Aaron P. Bowman:

There is some uncertainty about Aaron's date of birth. The 1850 census listed his year of birth as about 1825. The 1860 & 1870 census listed his year of birth as about 1820. Lawrence County, OH death records list "Aaron P. Bowman… died 2 October 1875... age 55 years, 13 days... born in Virginia." By doing the math, this puts his date of birth as September 20, 1820.

There has been no information recovered on Aaron's lineage. It is only known that he was born in VA.  Family legend speaks of a German heritage.  However, since the spelling of the Bowman name is English, it is likely that his ancestors originated in England and may have migrated to Germany before coming to America. Baughman, Baumann, & Bomann are some German variant spellings. It also may be possible that his ancestors changed the spelling of their name after arriving in America.

William Bowman's death certificate mistakenly lists his father's name as Amelia Bowman, born in VA.  This may be a clue into Aaron's mother's name.

It is known that Aaron had a brother, John, who was also born in VA. Aaron vouched for John on his marriage license. Interestingly, Aaron and John married sisters, Melissa and Mahala Squires from OH.

Aaron was a common man who labored hard making bricks and farming. His personal estate was reported as $100 in the 1860 census. Accounting for inflation, his personal estate would be worth only $1800 in year 2000 currency.

Aaron lived his adult life in southern OH near the borders of WV & KY. He moved frequently and rented as indicated in the 1850, 1860, & 1870 censuses, and his children's birth places.

MELISSA SQUIRES is the daughter of Benjamin Squires & Mary Unknown. She was born Abt. 1827 in OH [2, 3, 4, 5]. She died on May 11, 1900 [6].

            Notes for Melissa Squires:

The 1850 & 1860 census listed Melissa as not being able to read or write.

Generation 2

2.         WILLIAM P. BOWMAN  (Aaron P. Bowman-1). He was born on February 4, 1848 in OH [2, 3, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 1]. Occupation 1880 (Blacksmith) [11]. He married Rachel Hannah Burke on September 27, 1883 in Scioto County, OH [12, 10, 9]. Occupation (2) 1900 (Laborer in brick yard)[8]. Burial on September 19, 1910 in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Scioto County, OH [13].

Notes for William P. Bowman:

William's date of birth is uncertain. The 1850, 1860, & 1900 censuses list his birth date as 1848. Tilly Bowman's genealogical notes from an interview with Viva Cyrus list the date as 1849. And his death certificate lists his date of birth as 1855, which is incorrect since he was listed in the 1850 census as being 2 years old.

His middle name may have been Page, Penn, or Peter.

Like his father, William was a common man who labored hard working in the brickyards. He was raised in southern OH, but most of his adult life, he resided just over the OH border in KY. He moved frequently and rented as indicated by the places of births for his children, and the 1900 & 1910 censuses. At the age of 62, the 1910 census reported that William was living back in Portsmouth, OH, where he died later that year.

Gerald Bowman reported that he recalled a story told by Edgar (William's son) in which he witnessed William being brutally killed in a labor altercation between scab workers and the trade union. William was one of the scab workers.

RACHEL HANNAH BURKE is the daughter of John Calvin Burke & Elizabeth Ann Bennett. She was born on April 27, 1862 in OH [10, 4, 5, 8, 9, 25]. She died on September 20, 1924 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, OH [10, 26].

Notes for Rachel Hannah Burke:

Rachel and William were married in OH, and shortly after they moved to KY where all their children were born. In the 1900 census, Rachel's family was living just 6 houses down from her mother, Elizabeth, in Lewis County, KY. The 1910 census reported that they had moved back to OH. The 1920 census listed Rachel, her daughter, Geneva, and grandson, Wallace Hughes, living together in Detroit, MI.  Rachel’s sons, Oscar, Oliver, and Edgar were also living in the Detroit area in 1920.  At the time of her death, she was living back in Portsmouth, OH.

Notes for Edgar Bowman:

Edgar was born and raised in KY. At 18, Edgar was working as a blacksmith helper in OH. He joined the U.S. army at age 22 to serve in WWI. Shortly after his discharge from the military, he married Viva and they moved to Detroit, MI where Edgar got a job at Ford Motor Company as a machine operator. Later in his career, he was a metal mixer and assisted engineering in fabricating metal at the Milford Ford plant. He retired from Ford Motor Company in his 60s.

In the 1940s, Edgar and Viva purchased an 80-acre farm in which they resided on for the rest of their lives. The farmhouse had electricity; it was a first for the family. Although there were some attempts at farming, it was never a serious endeavor. The farm was located at 6010 Fish Lake Rd., Holly, MI.

Edgar and his family had to deal with his addiction to alcohol.  Some said it bought out irresponsibility & meanness, and others saw a fun & playful side.

In his 50s, Edgar had a bout with cancer resulting in the removal of one eye. The grandchildren would get a kick out of seeing his glass eye on the bathroom sink where he would leave it overnight. His cancer laid in remission till the end of his life.

VIVA BERTHA CYRUS is the daughter of Ulysses Cyrus & Grace Estelle Ealem. She was born on September 14, 1895 in Jonesboro, Craighead County, AR [32, 43, 10, 13]. Burial on January 16, 1987 in Highland Township Cemetery, Oakland County, MI [13, 40].

Notes for Viva Bertha Cyrus:

Viva's family of origin was from WV; however, they were living in AR when she was born because her father had moved the family so he could find work. A few years after her birth, the family moved back to WV where she was raised.

At 5 years old, Viva's family had running water for the first time.

Viva recollected living next door to the White Creek Post Office and general store in WV at age 7. She often observed Old Hatfield (of the Hatfield & McCoy feud) shopping at the general store. She also remembered her grandfather, Henry Smith Cyrus, doing pickup and deliveries in his express buggy wagon.

Viva recalled her parents separating for 3 months when she was 10 years old. Then they reconciled their differences and moved back together. A year later, they finally were divorced. The family moved to Portsmouth, OH to get a fresh start.

Viva had an estranged relationship with her father due to the divorce caused by his unfaithfulness to her mother. She had strong feelings of resentment and animosity towards him.

All Viva's children were born at home except Gerald. Because she was bedridden most of her difficult pregnancy with him, she did not want to risk an at-home delivery.

Viva insisted on planting vegetables, flowers, and bushes in the day following a full moon. She swore by the Farmer's Almanac.

Photos of Edgar & Viva are viewable on My Family Home Page.  Also, photos of the Bowman children are viewable on My Family Home Page.
