Notes for John Calvin Burke:

There has been no information recovered on John's lineage. It is only known that he was born in VA. However, the Burke name has an Irish ethnic origin. The Burke name is a more recent derivative of de Burgh or de Bourke, and has many noteworthy & noble members such as William de Burgh (a.k.a. William the Conqueror). The prefix of de means of, so his name can be translated as William of Burgh.

John was a common man who labored hard in the coal mines. The census records reveal that John's family rented homes and never owned property.

John died relatively young, sometime in his forties. He may have died of black lung, which was an occupational hazard of coal miners.

ELIZABETH ANN BENNETT is the daughter of Ephraim Bennett & Bethel Meade. She was born March 1837 in OH [2, 4, 5, 6]. She died on June 28, 1910 in Scioto County, OH [7, 8].

iv. RACHEL HANNAH BURKE. She was born on April 27, 1862 in OH [1, 2, 14, 5, 15, 16]. She married William P. Bowman. They were married on September 27, 1883 in Scioto County, OH [3, 1, 15]. She died on September 20, 1924 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, OH [1, 17].

v. SUSAN M. BURKE. She was born Abt. 1868 in OH [2, 4, 1]. She died on March 13, 1951 [1].

vi. JOHN CALVIN BURKE, (JR.). He was born September 1870 in OH [4, 5, 18, 19, 20]. He married Annie M. Alexander. They were married 1892 [21, 22]. Occupation 1900 (Brickyard Laborer) [5]. Occupation (2) 1910 (Engineer) [23, 24]. Occupation (3) 1930 (Farmer) [25]. He died on August 5, 1943 in Scioto County, OH [26].

vii. THADDEUS BENNETT BURKE. He was born Abt. 1873 in KY [4]. He married Mary Etta Rockwell. They were married on May 14, 1899 in Firebrick, Greenup County, KY [9]. He died on August 31, 1942 [9].

3. RACHEL HANNAH BURKE. (John Calvin Burke-2, Mr. Burke-1). She was born on April 27, 1862 in OH [1, 2, 14, 5, 15, 16]. She married William P. Bowman on September 27, 1883 in Scioto County, OH [3, 1, 15]. She died on September 20, 1924 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, OH [1, 17].

Notes for Rachel Hannah Burke:

Rachel and William were married in OH, and shortly after they moved to KY where all their children were born. They moved frequently within KY and rented as indicated by the places of births for their children and the 1900 & 1910 censuses. In the 1900 census, Rachel's family was living just 6 houses down from her mother, Elizabeth, in Lewis County, KY. The 1910 census reported that they had moved back to OH. The 1920 census listed Rachel, her daughter, Geneva, and grandson, Wallace Hughes, living together in Detroit, MI. Rachel’s sons, Oscar, Oliver, and Edgar were also living in the Detroit area in 1920. At the time of her death, she was living back in Portsmouth, OH.

WILLIAM P. BOWMAN is the son of Aaron P. Bowman & Melissa Squires. He was born on February 4, 1848 in OH [27, 28, 28, 2, 5, 15, 1, 29]. Occupation 1880 (Blacksmith) [4]. Occupation (2) 1900 (Laborer in brick yard) [5]. He died on September 17, 1910 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, OH [30, 1, 31]. Burial on September 19, 1910 in Greenlawn Cemetery, Portsmouth, Scioto County, OH [30].

WILLIAM P. BOWMAN & RACHEL HANNAH BURKE. They had 6 children.

i. CARRIE BOWMAN. She was born on November 21, 1884 in KY [5, 7, 32, 33, 34]. She married Charles Ernest Pendleton. They were married on July 1, 1908 [1, 35]. She died on October 15, 1974 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, OH [1, 32, 36].

ii. OSCAR BOWMAN. He was born on June 30, 1887 in Greenup, KY [5, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42]. He married Helen L. Fowler. They were married on June 17, 1909 [1]. Occupation 1920 (Upholsterer at a Cadillac Auto Factory) [37, 43, 44]. He died on August 3, 1962 in Ferndale, Oakland County, MI [45, 46]. Burial on August 6, 1962 in Oak View Cemetery, Royal Oak, MI [45, 47].

iii. OLIVER BOWMAN. He was born on May 9, 1889 in KY [5, 15, 37, 45, 1]. Occupation 1910 (Lacier in Shoe Factory) [15]. He died on March 4, 1920 in Eloise, Wayne County, MI [45, 1]. Burial on March 8, 1920 in Evergreen Cemetery, Wayne County, MI (no tombstone on his gravesite) [45].

In the 1920 census, Oliver was a patient at Eloise Hospital in Westland, Wayne County, MI. He died of spinal meningitis a few months after the 1920 census was taken.

iv. GEORGE CALVIN BOWMAN. He was born on November 10, 1890 in Spring Field, Greenup County, KY [17, 1, 32, 5]. Military service on October 13, 1908 in WW1 [17]. He married Frieda Alberta Fowler. They were married Abt. 1930 in IN [17]. He died on June 17, 1965 in Panorama City, LA, CA [17, 32]. Burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, CA [17].

v. EDGAR BOWMAN. He was born on March 28, 1893 in Firebrick, Lewis County, KY [30, 1, 5, 15, 37, 48, 49]. Occupation 1910 (Blacksmith Shop Helper) [15]. Military service 1915 in KY [1]. He married Viva Bertha Cyrus. They were married on March 21, 1918 in Catlettsburg, KY [1]. Occupation (2) 1920 (Machine Operator @ Ford Motor Company) [50].
