Ealem Family of WV, OH, and MI

Generation 1

1.         JOHN F. EALEM. He was born Abt. 1847 in Wayne County, VA [1]. Military service 1863 in Civil War, enlisted in AL [2]. Occupation 1870 (Steel Mill worker, Birmingham, AL) [1]. He married Mary Ellen Staley on February 9, 1871 in Greenup, KY[10].

Notes for John F. Ealem:

There has been no information recovered on John's lineage. It is only known that he was born in VA. However, the Ealem name has an English ethnic origin. Moreover, the Ealem name has often been spelled as Elam in documents, which also has an English ethnic origin.

Family legend recounts that his family of origin was known to own slaves. This is possible, as there are some African-Americans with the surname of Ealem. Also, I am not sure if there is a relationship to John, but the 1860 Slave Schedule for GA lists Elizabeth Ealem as owning 2 slaves.

John was a soldier in the Civil War on the side of the Confederacy. Civil War records show him as enlisting in AL, holding the rank of private, and being taken prisoner in GA in 1863.

MARY ELLEN STALEY is the daughter of Jacob Staley & Elizabeth Burke. She was born September 1847 in Wayne County, VA [3, 4, 5, 6]. She died Abt. 1953 [1].

Notes for Mary Ellen Staley:

Mary Ellen grew up living next door to Henry Smith Cyrus (1860 & 1870 census).  Interestingly, Mary Ellen's daughter, Grace Estelle Ealem, married Henry Smith Cyrus’s son, Ulysses Cyrus.

Family legend reports that she is half-French and she lived to be 106 years old.

Notes for Grace Estelle Ealem:

Shortly after marrying Ulysses and having their first child in WV, the family moved to AR to find work for Ulysses. After about 5 years of working in AR and having 2 more children, they moved back to WV.

Grace and Ulysses were divorced in about 1906 because of Ulysses's alcohol abuse and his unfaithfulness. It was reported that Grace became bitter and depressed about the way Ulysses caused the breakup of the family.

After divorcing Ulysses, Grace became a businesswoman. She had a Millinery Shop (she was a hat maker) in OH and ran her boarding houses in OH and MI.

Later in life, Grace became addicted to Codeine (a narcotic drug used in cough remedies and derived from opium or morphine). Because doctors limited the quantity, she got her boarders and her son, Basil, to get more Codeine to feed her habit. Her daughter, Viva, forced her to go through withdrawal and detoxification in Viva's home for one month.

At the end of her life, Grace lived with her son, Basil, at 16657 Poplar St., Wyandotte, MI.

Photos of Grace, Ulysses, and their children are viewable on my Family Home Page.
