John B. Gossett (son of Matthias Gossett and Mary Dunham)38 was born 1769 in Chester County, PA., and died 28 December 1823 in New Market, Highland County, Ohio. He married (1) Honora Hull on 8 April 1788, daughter of John Hull and Rachel Gossett.

John Gossett was born in Pennsylvania but went at an early age to Virginia and then to Bourbon Co., Ky. In 1797 he moved his family to the settlement at Chillicothe, Ohio. After he resided there for two years, he moved to New Market, Highland CO., Ohio in the fall of 1799 where he lived the rest of his life. John built the county's first grist mill in New Market.

This John Gossett is found in the D.A.R. Patriot index on p.277. Gossett, John: b c. 1760 d p.12-22-1823 m Honour - Pvt PA. That is the only information listed for John in the book. However, we do have other information about him. From the book Genealogies of Kentucky Families, From the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society we find an article titled The Gossett Family by Josie Gossett. On p. 389 we have the following; "We must admit we have no further data on Matthias Jr. so take up the information obtained and given by Mrs. Newcomer of her ancestor, John (1769-1823), who settled in Highland County, Ohio. Her account is most complete and satisfactory and we have every reason to believe her records are authentic, and here
submit them as given by her."

"The burial place and the will of John Gossett, brother or Jacob, ancestor of Miss Gossett, have been discovered. John Gossett and his wife Honour Gossett, were buried in Sander's Cemetery...... and the inscription on his stone reads, "John Gossett departed this Life, December the 28th, 1823," His age thus proves he was born in 1769......... John Gossett was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, but lived in Virginia until his marriage. He, his wife, and oldest child, Amoriah, appear on the 1791 census in Pittsburgh, Pa. He moved to Bourbon County, Ky., taking his family and bought a farm, which he sold in 1796." The article goes on to say that in 1799 he was one of the first settlers in Highland County, Ohio.

John and Honour later moved to Highland County, Ohio where he built a grist mill about 1802 which he later sold to Lewis Gribler in 1804. John also served as the second Representative from Highland County to the State legislature in Ohio from 1809-1810.

From records, we find that John was described as a quiet, modest man and a worthy, unassuming farmer. He was a man of energy, endurance, courage, and cheerfulness.[bellsa3.ged]
