Notes for MARGARET MCINTURF:

The Haynes family history, previously mentioned, states that Margaret McInturff, a daughter of John McInturff, was born 21 Dec 1764 in Shenandoah Valley, Va., and her husband, George Haynes, ws born 1 Dec 1757 in Frederick County.  Actually, what became Shenandoah County was not cut off from the part of Frederick County until 1772 and was first named Dunmore County.  The Haynes history did not give the source of information about the place and date of Margaret’s birth.

Still another source gives a different date for her birth.  An ancestral chart of Elinor Mary McCord Whitney of Kansas, in Vol. XII, No. 1, of Kansas Kin Quarterly, gave the birth year of Margaret McInturff as 1758.  No place of birth was given, nor the source of the information.

He served in the Revolutionary Army of George Washington.

 

David and Nancy sold land in Powell’s Big Fort, Shenandoah Co., VA on December 8, 1795. After the 1795 sale, there were several land transactions in which only David, and not his wife were involved.

 

The records show that David at one time and another owned in his own right or in conjunction with others as much as 1100 acres of land. David was appointed administrator and appraiser of several estates. He also performed some public services. The County Court on September 14, 1813 appointed him overseer of the road from the Crossroads in Powell’s Fort to Adam Shearman’s farm. In 1819 he was among a group appointed as school commissioners. But from 1816 onward, tracing him becomes more difficult. David’s will was dated December 29, 1827. He lived for more than 17 years after he drew up his will, dying February 12, 1845, when he was 83 years old. He outlived all of his brothers and sisters, only one of who reached the age of 40. He is the only one of John McInturff’s children whose grave is known to have an identifiable marker. He is buried in the old section of Dry Run Cemetery, Shenandoah County, VA, at the bottom of the hill.  The cemetery is believed to have been started on land belonging to or adjoining David, in the late 1700’s. The date of death and burial place of his wife, Catherine are not known. It is known that she outlived her husband, as she was one of the buyers at the sale of David’s property. Nancy Nichols McInturff is buried in Dry Run Cemetery.

 

Notes for CATHERINE MUNCH:

The late Eugene Munch (d 28 Sept 1974), sage of the Fort whose grandfather was a McInturff, told this writer in 1970 that the first McInturffs settled at the southern end of the valley, near the headwaters of Passage Creek which traverses the Fort.  There the land rises toward the inclosing mountain wall.

 

Near the McInturff settlement in Powell’s Fort was an Indian and deer trail reaching upward and over the mountains at that corner of the Massanuttens.  Legend has it that the McInturff men pitched in to widen the trail into a narrow, rugged road, according to the late Eugene Munch.  That opening from Fort Valley into the broad Shenandoah Valley to the west became known thereafter as McInturf’s Gap.

BENJAMIN  BARCLAY.- All of the people of Harrison township know Benjamin Barclay, the subject of this sketch, and know him favorably. He was born May 4, 1828 in Licking county Ohio, being the son of James and Elizabeth (German) Barclay. The father was born in 1804 in Virginia, and the mother in Maryland. The father came to Licking county when but a boy with his parents, and spent the greater parr of his life in farming.  In politics he was a democrat of the Jackson school. He and his wife were members of the Methodist church. Benjamin Barclay lived with his parents until the age of eighteen, when he was apprenticed to the trade of blacksmith, working at thsi for two years for his board and clothing. After this he followed his trade for two years and then was a farmer for one year. At this time he came to Indiana and located in Henry co, followin his trade, after which he came to this county and bought eighty acres of land in the northwest corner of Harrison township. Here he built a shop and worked at his trade, farming at the same time for eighteen years. At this time our subject lives on a farm in this township, and still owns the original acres upon which he settled. Mr. Barclay was married November 1, 1849 to Miss Elizabeth (McInturf.) His wife was born July 4, 1831, and died January 25, 1865. She was the daughter of  Frederick and Anna (Myers) McInturf, they being natives of Ohio, her father following the occupation of a farmer. Mrs. Barclay, the wife of our subject, was a devoted member of the Methodist Church. By this marriage our subject was the father  of six children, namely: Salathiel, deceased; Louisa, Susannah, Sarah, Netta , and James Leonidas. Mr. Barclay again entered into the holy bonds of matrimony December 24, 1885, taking for his wife the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Shafer) Williamson; her father being a native of New Jersey, where he was born in 1790, and her mother was born in Germany in 1802, the latter came to this country with her parents when but a child. The father of Mrs. Barclay came to Scioto county, Ohio, where he owned a fine farm at the time of his death, which occurred in 1849. His wife survived him until the year 1880, when she died in the faith of the Methodist church, in which she had lived all her days. The second wife of Mr. Barclay was the widow of W.F. Nottingham, who was a native of Ohio and came to this state when but a  child. He was born in 1828, and died in 1880. He was married to the present Mrs. Barclay Aug. 4, 1850, and by this marriage Mrs. Barclay had four children, namely: Joseph, deceased; George, deceased; John; and Sarah Catherine, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Barclay are both consistent members of the Methodist church. Our subject is devoted to the principles of the democratic party, and heartily supports its candidates.

13.  HENRY5 MCINTURFF (DAVID I4 MCINTURF, JOHANNES3, HANS GEORG2 MECKENDORFER, CHRISTOFFEL1) was born 1787, and died 1846.  He married ELIZABETH RIDENOUR 28 Feb 1821, daughter of RIDENOUR and UNKNOWN.  She was born 13 Jul 1803, and died 09 Oct 1865.

 

Notes for HENRY MCINTURFF:

He was nicknamed “Mountain Henry” to distinguish him from his cousin, Henry McInturff. (son of Frederick). Henry lived up on the mountain off of the main road in Fort Valley, Shenandoah Co., VA.

 

Henry McInturff and Elizabeth Ridenour.  Henry McInturff was born @1787. He was nicknamed “Mountain Henry” to distinguish him from his cousin, Henry McInturff. (son of Frederick). Henry lived up on the mountain off of the main road in Fort Valley, Shenandoah Co., VA. Mountain Henry was married on February 28, 1821 to Elizabeth Ridenour, daughter of Adam and Magdalene (Munch) Ritenour. Elizabeth was born July 13, 1803 and died on Oct. 9, 1865. The date of Henry’s death is not known, but it was in 1846 was confirmed by his son Andrew.

 

Henry and Elizabeth had together, 14 children. Of the seven sons of Henry and Elizabeth, 6 served in the Civil War: 5 on the Confederate side (Franklin, Henry, Levi, Lewis and Marcus M.) and one on the Union side (Alfred R.) Two gave their lives for the Confederacy, Marcus M. (killed at Brandy Station) and Franklin (killed at Gettysburg).

 

At the Dry Run Cemetery are the gravestones of “H.M.- 1846”, believed to be Mountain Henry, and “Elizabeth Ridenour McInturff”, undated. Levi was the oldest son of Mountain Henry and Elizabeth, and on the same day that Levi was named as administrator of the estate, he was also named administrator of his brother Franklin’s estate, who was killed at Gettysburg in July 1863.  The exact date of Mountain Henry's death is not known.  That is was in 1846 was confirmed by the biographical sketch of his son Andrew.  He died of typhoid fever.

Elihu McInturf, one of the prominent early settlers of De Kalb County, was

born in Licking County, Ohio, June 17, 1816, a son of John and Hannah (Parr)

McInturf.  When he was twelve years of age he went to live with an uncl

and remained with him till nineteen years of age, when his uncle died,

leaving him enough to buy fifty acres of land.  He was sick for the next

three years and needed the money, and upon his recovery was obliged to go to

work for wages.  In 1840 he went to Clark County, Ill., but in less than a

year returned home and remained till October, 1844, when he cane to Indiana,

and bought eighty acres of Government land.  He worked for the settlers to

obtain provisions to live on, and in the meantime began to clear his la

and get it ready to plant a crop.  He has been industrious and frugal, and

to his firs purchase has added till he now has a fine farm of 132 acres,

all under cultivation. He was married in 1841 to Rachel Brown, a native of

Knox County, Ohio, daughter of Silas and Sarah Ann (Merriott) Brown.  They

had two children---Sarah Ann, wife of Abraham Orr, of Kendallville, and

William M., who married Emma Bronson, and lives on the old homestea

politics Mr. McInturf is a Democrat.

Barkhurst Mill

 

The Barkhurst Gristmill was built about 1830 by Benjamin and John Pierpoint. John Pierpoint's sons Jonathan and Samuel worked with their father in the mill and eventually assumed the operation. Eli McInturf purchased the mill in 1875. McInturf continued to operate the gristmill until the late 1800's when the mill was bought by the Barkhurst Family.

 

Today, the 2 1/2-story frame structure stands tenuously in ruins. The large block sandstone foundation is deteriorating and the 1830 support beams are disintegrating. The floors are all but gone. The roof is in fair condition relative the condition of the building. Some of the windows are boarded while some are just open. The exterior of the structure is covered in beautifully weathered gray plank siding. Present owners of the mill have tried to acquire financial assistance to repair the foundation to secure the structure but have not been successful.

 

Barkhurst Gristmill, although in a state of ruins, offers an interesting location. Found in a remote area of eastern Ohio, the mill sits on Wolf Creek next to the Barkhurst Covered Bridge. There are remnants of the old millrace dug by Benjamin and John Pierpoint. It is fun to interpret the landscape and identify where the millrace was funneled to the mill and where the waterwheel was located. (Hart, Ruth)

Leonard Cage and Emily McInturff.  Emily Walton “Emma” McInturff was born in Woodstock ,VA on December 7, 1859 and died August 6, 1956 at The Crowder Nursing Home in Valley Forge, Chester County, PA at the age of 96. She first married @1879 in Washington D. C., Leonard P. Cage, born @1830 in Brandywine, MD ( Leonard was the son of Thomas S. Cage and Susannah S. Lawson, they were married Jan. 21, 1817 in Prince Georges County, MS.) Emily then married second in @1889 to Charles Baden  and married a third time to ? Tayman.

 

In the 1880 census, Leonard is 50 years old and Emily is 21 years old. Leonard was married first on December 2, 1852 to Sarah Ann Davis in Prince Georges County, MD. Leonard died before 1900, but daughter, Pearl, was born in Sept. of 1896. The parishioners of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church (North), located at Box. 141, Cedarville Road, Brandywine, MD laid the cornerstone of their white frame church in 1879. According to Mrs. Pearl Grimes, who was the daughter of Leonard Cage, Leonard was at the cornerstone laying and he put $1 in it for good luck. The charm worked almost immediately, because he met his future bride, Emily, that very day, and they were married shortly afterward in Anacostia.
