Levi David (L. D.) Balkum is the patriarch of the present day Balkum family line. Descendants of Levi David Balkum and his wife Tennessee (Tennie) Bell Cothran Balkum trace ancestors from Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, to Texas. This family line fought with the Confederate States Army at the time of the Civil War.

Although the family name has been handed down as "Balkum" it was written and spelled several different ways. These names are noted: Baukum, or Bankum, or Baukman, or Balkan, or Balkener, or Balkham, or Baldwin, or Baldin, or Balcombe.

  Emily May Balkum is the second daughter of Mack Allen Balkum and Angelina Boyd Balkum. Emily May was born before the start of the civil war 6/14/1860. She grew up in Lauderdale County, Alabama. Emily May was 16 when her older sister Fannie married. Emily May did not Marry.

  Emily May Balkum was called Aunt May when she was older. She was loved by the family. When Levi David Balkum's wife, Tennie died Aunt May steped in to help with the family. Aunt May died 4/11/1921.

  Mack Hubert Balkum is the youngest brother of Levi David Balkum. He is called Uncle Mack. Mack was age ten when he came from Alabama to Texas. Mack lived with his older brother Levi David during several moves in central east Texas and west Texas.

  Robert Alexander Balkum was born 01/19/1870 in Lauderdale County Alabama. Robert is called Uncle Bob by family. Uncle Bob came with his brothers Levi David and Uncle Mack and sister Aunt May from Alabama to east Texas at about age 13.
