It is quite reasonable to suppose that he was a scion of that proud house of Scotts of Scotts Hall of Kent, England, from which so many claim descent in this country, but this is only conjecture. My suggestion is that our William Scott is connected to Benjamin Scott of Braintree, where his father-in-law, William Allis, was located some twelve years before settling in Hadley, which might account for his acquaintance with his future wife and for his coming to Hatfield. As before stated, William Scott came to that part of Hadley now Hatfield, about 1668. He married, Jan. 28, 1670, Hannah, daughter of Lieut. William Allis of Hatfield, b. about 1649. Aug. 8, 1670, William Scott was assigned a home lot 20 rods in width on the east side of the street near the north end of the street, opposite of Sergt. Ben Wait's, and this lot of Ben Wait's was where John Brown lived in 1882. There were two lots north of William Scott's before we reach the road running to the ferry.(+) Jan. 16, 1671, he had another grant of land on the plains. He also had division in the commons. Hatfield street as first laid out extended one mile north and south; the street was about 10 rods wide and the house lots of about eight acres each were laid out on each side. As William Scott was some seven years later in coming than the original settlers his home, as has been stated above, was located at the north end of the long street, near the present estates of Ellis Wait and William Dorothy (according to information furnished by Mr. D. W. Wells of Hatfield). Here then our ancestor began life in a somewhat rude house; but as a sawmill had been erected in Hatfield in 1664 or 5, no doubt he had a framed house enclosed by boards in a plain way. But this old first home has passed away long ago, as have all the others which were then scattered along the old street. At this time there were probably about thirty families in town. The rich meadows of Hatfield were mostly clear of trees when the whites settled there, and ready for the plow, where the red race for ages had raised Corn; so the yeomen of the valley had a much easier time to commence life than those who settled in the hill towns. "The Hatfield lands were mostly purchased from the Indian chiefs Umponchalla and Quanquont, of the Norwottuck tribe." (*)Vide Probate Records at Northampton, vol. 2, p. 1 and 2 As the Indians had been fairly dealt with, peace had subsisted between them and the settlers till war was incited by the wily King Philip. On October 19, 1675, the Indians, numbering nearly 800, made a furious onset upon Hatfield with the determination to destroy the town and slay the inhabitants, but they had been expected by the English, who received them so hotly that they were beaten off and the town was saved with small loss to Hatfield.(*) William Scott joined the expedition which made the attack upon the Indians at the Falls (now Turners Falls) May 19, 1676, which resulted in the signal defeat of the enemy, as well as the death of many English, William Allis Jr., a brother-in-law of William Scott, being one of the number killed. This was one of the most noted battles of the valley. On Sept. 19, 1677, another attack was made upon Hatfield by the Indians, when twelve persons were killed and seventeen captives taken. These captives were redeemed excepting three, who were killed by the Indians. This digression is made to show the perils amid which our ancestors labored. During these scenes of turmoil Hatfield lost about one-half of her dwellings by their being destroyed by the enemy. A portion of Hatfield street was in time protected by a palisaded inclosure, which was formed by setting split timbers eight feet long in the ground in an upright position, the tops being fastened by cross timbers. William Scott's house being at the extreme north end of the street, must have been outside of this enclosure. This was indeed a time when it required nerve to move beyond the smoke of one's own dwelling; the Indian lurked on every hand and no one knew when a blow would be struck.(+) That William Scott performed his full share in the common defense is evinced by the fact that in 1677 the General Court at Boston allowed him for military expenses œ 2, 16 s. But war's alarms ceased after a while and prosperity smiled on our river town, and the farmer added to his acres and the family grew in number as the years rolled by. It seems that the staid dames of that elder day were fond of finery as now, and although the law was stern yet in 1673 we find that William Scott's wife and five other Hatfield women were fined for wearing silk contrary to the law. (*)Vide Hubbard's History. (+)For many of the above facts I am indebted to Judd's valuable history of Hadley. William Scott appears to have been a prosperous man in his day, and at the close of his long life had accumulated quite a property in landed estate. Besides his house lot on the main street he had a lot each in the north and south meadows. In the first division of commons he had lot No. 65, 14 rods wide and over three miles long. In division No. 3 he had lot No. 6, which was 13 rods wide and about three miles long; these were located in Hatfield. In division No. 2 he had lot No. 40, 12 rods wide and about two miles long. In division No. 4 he had lot No. 69, which was 13 rods wide and four miles in length. These two last lots were in the present town of Whately.(*) I have sought--diligently through the Hatfield Town Records, as well as in the old cemetery--for the date of death of William Scott, but have failed to find it. There is no headstone to mark his grave. I was fortunate enough to find a copy of his will among the archives of Memorial Hall at Deerfield, dated Feb. 15, 1716. This is the original will, but I am inclined to the opinion that it was not admitted to probate, as no record of it can be found at Northampton, where it should appear. It is probable that William Scott died about 1718; if so, he was about 83. The will commences in this wise: "In the name of God, Amen. The fifteenth day of February in the 3d year of his Majesty's reign, Anno Domini 1716-17, I, William Scott of Hatfield, in the County of Hampshire in his Majesty's Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England, being weakly of body and crazy of constitution but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God therefor, calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed to all men to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say principally and first of all, give and recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth, to be buried in decent Christian burial att the Discretion of my executor herein named, Nothing doubting but at the Gen'l Resurection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as touching such worldly Estates wherewith it has pleased God to Bless me in this Life far beyond my Deserts, I Give, Devise & Dispose of the same in the following manner and form. Imprimis. I Give and Bequeath to Hannah my (*)From unpublished letter of J. M. Crafts. Dearly beloved wife, after my Decease, (She outliving me) the use and Improvement of my whole Estate both Real and Personal for her Support and Maintenance During the term of her Natural Life." Then follow the items of bequests to several members of the family, viz:--To his eldest son Josiah, Three acres of land in Denison's Farm in addition to what had already been given him in 1707. To his daughter, Hannah Braughton, forty shillings. The same amount was also devised to his sons Richard and William, and remaining daughter, Abigail Bingham. The remainder of his estate was devised to his son Joseph. The will was witnessed by Thomas Haskins, Nathaniel Dickinson ye 3d, and Joseph Wait. Benjamin and Margaret were living in Rowley, MA, in 1651 and may have been of Braintree and then of Cambridge before that. It was not until 11 May 1664 that "it was granted and voated that Benjamin Scot should have what land could conveniently be spared betweene Edward Hasens and the end of Mrs. Rogers land leaveing sufficient way to the clay pits." It is with sadness that we note that Benjamin's widow, Margaret, was executed in Salem, 22 September, 1692, as guilty of "certain detestable arts called Witchcraft and Sorceries." She was accused as follows: (Frances Wycome v. Margaret Scott) "The deposition of frances wycom who testifyeth and saith that quickly after the first court at (Salem) about wicthcraft margerit Scott whom I very well knew: or hir Apperance came to me and did most greviously torment me by choaking and almost presing me to death: and so she did continue affleting me by times tell the 5'th August 1692 being the day of hir examination allso during the time of hir examination margerit scott did most greviously afflect me: and also severall times sence: and I belive in my heart that margerit Scott is a wicth and that she has often affleted me by acts of wicthcraft." frances Wycom owned: to the grand Inquest: that the above written evidence: is the truth upon oath: Sept'r 15: 1692: Jurat in Curia. The Benjamin Scotts knots Date: Thu, 23 Aug 2001 20:19:58 EDT From: BetsyS6022@aol.com To: Brlenker@attbi.com This E-mail I believe has answered my question about the two wives of Benjamin Scott. The Benjamin's have been mixed up over the years by the different researchers. This is the first confirmation of more than one Benjamin that I have received. Hi Barbara, Thank you for your prompt attention. Unfortunately you have tapped into one of the more truly messed-up genealogies that I have ever come across. The primary problem is that there were at least THREE separate and distinct Benjamin Scotts operating in that early time. The Benjamin Scott of Rowley, Massachusetts was the one who married Margaret Stephenson. His family and descendancy is thoroughly documented in The Scott Genealogy by Mary Lovering Holman (1919). The Benjamin Scott of Braintree, Massachusetts, husband of Hannah who married John Harbour after Benjamin's death at an early age, was father of Hannah Scott Webb. I know this because Christopher Webb was involved as a son-in-law in Hannah Scott Harbour's final administration. Then there's the Benjamin Scott who hooked up with Hannah Kimball. They were in New Jersey, etc. and I frankly haven't paid a lot of attention to them because my guy is the Braintree Ben. Not to assist us, at this far removed time, both the Rowley Ben and the Braintree Ben had sons they named Benjamin. Rowley's Benjamin the son I think married Susanna Scales; Braintree's Benjamin the son never married on account of a thwarted romance with a neighbor, and he died quite young. I'm truly sorry to say so, but the World Family Trees are just wrong, mostly! I've found also that Farmer and Savage perpetuate the confusion, and even Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 states clearly in the new CD-ROM version that 8 or more sources get the relationships wrong. I've found most helpful Waldo Chamberlain Sprague's fairly recent work on the Families of Braintree, Massachusetts, and of course, the Lovering book on the Rowley family. Betsy Scott Notes for Margaret Kinsey Stephenson: Per Dave Kulchar (http://awtc.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dkulchar&id=I1591 - Kulchar Miller Clan) Margaret was hanged as a witch during the Salem witch trials. Surname also spelled Stevenson. Children of Benjamin Scott and Margaret Stephenson are: 128 i. William Allis: SOURCE: Genealogy of WILLIAM ALLIS of Hatfield, Mass. and Descendents1630-1919, by Horatio D. ALLIS. Printed by Art Press, Hartford, CT. Emigrated from England abt. 1635. Took Freeman's Oath at Braintree, MA in 13 MAY 1640 ("List of Freeman of Mass" by Lucius R Page pg 18). Removed to Connecticut & later Hatfield Location of death according to Judy Stubbs in Prodigy note to Norma Baker Sept 1993 According to History of Whately by JH Temple he was a deacon, lieutenant of cavalry. WILLIAM ALLIS [0] was born between 1613 and 1616, probably in Dagenham,Essex County, or London, England, and came to this country with Winthrop's fleet in 1630. The fleet consisted of eleven vessels: Arabella, Talbot, Ambrose, Jewel, Charles, Mayflower (third voyage),William and Francis, Hopewell, Whale, Success, and Trial. In the Winthrop colonists, consisting of 700 immigrants, three distinct communities were represented: (1) those from Dorset and Devon, the Dorchester men, who first settled in Boston a number of years beforeit received that name; (2) those from Lincolnshire, properly called Boston men, who had decided upon the name of Boston for the newsettlement before they left England; and (3) those from London and Essex. William Allis [0] came with the last named company and was no doubt one of the 39 men on the Mayflower (third voyage). They first touched at Salem, but landed at Charlton Harbor, Boston (then called Trimountain), 1July 1630. The Mayflower brought what was called the Braintree Company, which included with William Allis [0], Thomas Graves and Thomas Meekins. The families eventually intermarried. They were both surveyors and laid out the town, or fort, of Charlestown, the first regular settlement of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The first trace of William Allis after landing was in Mount Wollaston (afterward Braintree) in 1632. That town, comprising 50 square miles, was surveyed and laid out by him before 1634, and during that year, by order of the General Court, it was annexed to Boston. Large tracts of land were granted to certain inhabitants to settle in Mount Wollaston and William Allis [0] received 12 acres on 24 February 1640.On 13 May 1640, the inhabitants of Mount Wollaston were incorporated as the town of Braintree and, with Dorchester, Dunham, Hingham, Natasket, and Roxbury, were incorporated to form the city of Boston. On that date William Allis [0] was made a freeman. Only those who were members of the church were allowed to take the Freeman's Oath, which gave them the right to vote and hold office. Several historians have apparently been misled by the records of the Massachusetts Bay Colony into stating that the first knowledge of William Allis [0] was on 13 May1640. The reason for the error was that the official records of Braintree were first instituted on that day. He was made a freeman then because Braintree was incorporated into the city of Boston. Owned land in Rhode Island later granted part to Henry Neale on 24 June1685 [85R] BENJAMIN ALBEE (Albie/Alby), was in Boston in 1639 and in 1640when he exchanged land there for "three lots on the Mount" (MountWollaston). He was made freeman of the Colony May 18, 1642 at Braintreeand was prominent in affairs after that. He helped inventory the estateof Moses Payne 1643, and that of John Shephard in 1650, and was one ofthe townsmen or selectmen in 1648 when the Plymouth road was officiallylaid out through the town. In 1650 he removed to Medfield and about 1663to Mendon when the town was settled chiefly from Braintree where heagreed to erect the first water mill for grinding grain. He was calledcarpenter, surveyor, miller, and was one of the first selectmen in Mendon1667. In 1670 he was at Swansea. In King Philip's war Mendon wasabandoned and his house was burned by Indians and he returned to Medfieldwhere he is thought to have died. In Braintree he owned the Alby or Water Farm, so called, granted in 1639to Edward Tyng of Boston. When he acquired it is not of record butBenjamin Alby and wife Hannah of Medfield sold to John Hull Nov. 13, 1657the "Alby Farm" (280 acres) bought of Edward Tyng, bounded West, South &East by Monetequot River, and North by a great pond, George Burden andMr. Hutchinson of Boston, now in the hands of William Ellis (Allis) ofBraintree. This is the section now Pond St., South Braintree. (S.D.3:71)In 1657 when the Alby Farm was sold (S. D. 3:71) it was said to be"with lands of William Ellis" (Allis) who was a brother in law of HenryNeale. Notes for Mary: One weak source has Mary's maiden name as Bronson. According to ColonialGenealogist V4#4 Spring 1972 he was also a surveyor. According to"Marriages of Northampton Ma." John married Mary Clarke widow ofNathaniel Clarke on 12/12/1669. According to History of Whately by JHTemple he was a first captain of the Hatfield Militia. Owned land inherited from his father in Rhode Island later granted part to Henry Neale on 24 June 1685 Built many churches. He was erecting the first corn mill in Mill Riverwhen he died. He was the first town clerk of Hatfield and one of six men designated to survey and lay out the highway between Hadley and Windsor,Connecticut.
