JOSEPH MARIE4 TESSEROT (JEAN BAPTISTE3 TESSERAU, ANTOINE2 TESSEROT, ANTOINE1) was born Unknown in Montreal, Canada, and died 1834 in St.Genevieve,Missouri. He married ELIZABETH LEVRARD February 03, 1794 in New Bourbon,New France(St.Genevieve,Missouri), daughter of PIERRE LEVRARD and ELIZABETH LACOURSE. She was born January 28, 1776 in St.Genevieve,Missouri, and died Unknown in St.Genevieve,Missouri. Notes for JOSEPH MARIE TESSEROT: Joseph Tesserot was a rower and by way of the Mississippi river came to Kaskaskia, Ill., then to St.Genevieve, Missouri. He was the first to come to the USA. He settled in St.Genevieve, Missouri. Three of his son's later moved to and founders of St.Michael's later known as Fredericktown. Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri Although Ste. Genevieve County escaped much of the violence of the Civil War, emotions ran high on both sides. Lewis V. Bogy, a prominent lawyer and former president of the St.Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad, gave up his law practice in Ste. Genevieve rather than sign the oath of allegiance. On August 15th, 1861, a large Union force, commanded by Major John McDonald, arrived in Ste. Genevieve, surrounded the town, and remained in hiding until daybreak. Finding no Confederates closer than Pilot Knob, Major McDonald used the visit to relieve the Merchant's Bank of St. Louis, located in Ste. Genevieve, of $58,000 which he took back to St. Louis aboard the steamer Hannibal, openly threatening to return and take his vengeance upon those doing harm to local Union sympathizers. During the war Federal troops occupied the Ste. Genevieve County courthouse, and, according to local lore, Union troops periodically used the belvedere atop the Southern Hotel as an observation post on the Mississippi River. Ste. Genevieve was at the eastern end of the Old Plank Road which was still used by Union troops. On March 9, 1863, company D of the 23rd Iowa Infantry marched to Ste. Genevieve along the badly-worn old road to embark on the down river trip to Vicksburg. Events in Ste. Genevieve County also played a role in the emergence of the southern guerrilla leader Sam Hildebrand. While attempting to enlist in the Union army in November of 1861, Frank Hildebrand, Sam's brother, was arrested by Union vigilantes who sought a death warrant from a St. Francois County judge on a charge of horse stealing. The judge insisted on a fair trial, and Hildebrand was taken before Judge R. M. Cole in Ste. Genevieve County. When Judge Cole also insisted on due process, Frank was taken outside town and hung without trial, an event which fueled Sam Hildebrand's hatred of the north, and his determination to have revenge. In the City of Ste. Genevieve visitors can gain a better understanding of the institution of slavery in the region. Founded in 1732, the use of slave labor had been an integral part of the area's economy for generations before the Civil War. Many of the old families had large farms. The masters lived in town and the farms were worked by the slaves. A field of wheat was cut by ten slaves abreast, swinging their scythes with others following them and shocking the wheat. A number of buildings in the old French Colonial section of the City of Ste. Genevieve have quarters and kitchens typically used by slaves. [Tesreau.FTW] Joseph Tesserot was a rower and by way of the Mississippi river came to Kaskaskia, Ill., then to St.Genevieve, Missouri. She was born Unknown in Fredrecktown,Missouri(St.Michails Village), and died April 26, 1861 in St.Micheals Catholic Church Cemetery, Fredrecktown,Missouri(St.Michails Village). Notes for BERNARD TESSEREAU: Madison County, Missouri The people of Madison County found themselves victims of guerrilla fighting and military activity throughout the war. Union Lt. Commander Lindsey Murdock reported, "We tried to make treason odious and compelled all disaffected persons to take the oath of allegiance. In September, 1861, I marched my command into the lower part of Madison County, which was largely occupied by the rebel forces. We raided the farmers capturing their property and taking them prisoners." Fredericktown, the county seat, was located on the heavily travelled road from Ironton to Cape Girardeau, and was several times occupied by both Federal and Confederate forces. It was just south of the City of Fredericktown, along the Greenville Road, that the Battle of Fredericktown occurred. A plaque on the lawn of the Madison County courthouse describes the battle and Civil War activity in the county. In St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Fredericktown, visitors will find the grave of Col. Adin B. Lowe, a Confederate infantry commander who died during the Battle of Fredericktown. At the Masonic Cemetery, on South Main Street in Fredericktown, a monument erected near the graves of fallen Confederate soldiers commemorates the battle. A large brick residence, located at 205 South Main Street, served as Col. Carlin's headquarters during the Battle of Fredericktown. The handsome two-story structure was built in 1835 and now houses Cordelia's Bed and Breakfast. At Mine La Motte, located on Highway 00, three miles north of Fredericktown, visitors will find a monument which identifies Mine La Motte as the oldest lead mine west of the Mississippi. Lead mined at Mine La Motte was used for the manufacture of bullets for every military action of the United States from the American Revolution to the Korean Conflict. Following the Battle of Fredericktown, Union soldiers destroyed several furnaces at Mine La Motte to prevent the lead from falling into southern hands. PADBERG: FAMILIENVERBAND PADBERG American Division Representing Families of Twenty-eight Immigrants with the Surname Padberg, Padtberg, Patberg, and Pattberg Coat-of-Arms of the family Padtberg From the official 1420 Registry And the Official Coat-of Arms of the Familienverband Padberg Copyright ©Familienverband Padberg The Familienverband Padberg is an international organization founded in 1832 to research and preserve the heritage of the families of Padberg. THE VILLAGE OF PADBERG Founded in 1263 The village of Padberg, located in the HochSauerland of Southeast Westphalia represents the ancestral home for the Families of Padberg. The first documented record of the surname appeared in1030 in a document of Emperor Conrad II. Reference is made to the property of Count Haholde Pathberch who had died in the preceding year. Because of a bequest by Emperor Otto I, the predecessors of this Haholde III had received the fiefdom in 936. Otto I had had several motives for this donation, first as an honorarium to a Saxon Count from Geseke named Haholde I who had? Fought valiantly in the Hungarian wars. Otto's second motive proved more significant for the future Padberg family. Few roads ran through the heavy, dark forests of the Sauerland, and those which did held strategic importance for commerce as well as military forces. A fortress manned by a family of warrior knights would represent a strong imperial presence in that area. Thus, Haholde I started his castle fortress on a mountain above the Diemel River from which these ancient paths or roads could be protected. The mountain, "berg" in German, and the roads, called "pathes" in old German, created the basis for the formulation of the surname Padberg. Original spellings were "Pathberch," but this made an easy transition through "Pathberg" to "Padberg." Pronunciation similarities and inconsistencies in spelling in olde times account for most of the variations which exist today. The castle constructed on the mountain, known today as the Alte Hagen, was completed in 972 and was occupied as a residence by the families of Haholde III. Eventually this fortress on the mountain, above the Diemel and Rhene Rivers which converge at its base, was called the Old House Padberg, because in 1196 the family received permission from Phillip von Heinsberg, the Duke of Westphalia and Archbishop of Cologne, to construct a second fortress on a mountain ridge above the Hoppeke River. This fortress, which lay opposite the older castle, was completed in 1220, but did not become a residence until 1322, when Gottshcalk von Padberg founded the family line of the New House Padberg. The New House Family line lasted until 1537 when Rotger von Padberg died without heir and the property reverted back to the family of the Old House. Johnan von Padtberg, who died in 1558 and was married to Anna von Stockhausen, was the head of the Old House who received the New House inheritance. His sons, Friedrich Phillipp von Padtberg and Friedrich von Padtberg, became the founders of the Over House (Oberhaus) and the Under House (Unterhaus) Padberg. Of course at this time, in the sixteenth century, neither family resided in the castles, but rather chose to live in manor houses constructed in the town of Padberg. This central line of the family Padberg died out in 1814 with the death of Regina von Padtberg who had married Baron Maximilian Franz Droste zu Vischering in 1802. The couple resided in Padberg, calling themselves Droste zu Padtberg. The Old House Padberg (Constructed 936-972) Constructed in the Saxon style, the castle had fortifications and walls in concentric loops down the mountain. The building started by Count Haholde I of Geseke was completed by his son, Haholde II, after his father was killed in the Battle of Lechfeld near Augsburg in 955. The property was bequeathed to Haholde II's grandson, Haholde III. The descendants became the Counts of Padberg. The New House Padberg (Constructed 1196-1220) Constructed in the Norman style, the castle, even though built on a mountain ridge, had a moat or ditch around it. Originally constructed as a secondary fortification, the New House Castle protected the western approaches as well as the town of Padberg which lay between the two castles. A Knight of Padberg Knights of the warrior family of Padberg, from both houses, continued to serve their feudel lords. In the earlier period, the Padberg's were imperial vassals, serving under direct jurisdiction of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire. After 1180, with the redistricting of the old Germanic territories, the Padbergs became vassals of the newly formed Duchy of Westphalia. The Duke of that territory continued to be the Archbishop of Cologne (Köln) until 1803. After that date, the territory eventually became part of the greater kingdom of Prussia. The Padberg House in Küstelberg, built in 1666 Many branches were formed from the old Padberg family. Most of the American families are related to the Branch Küstelberg which began in 1530 when a descendant of the New House Padberg who had married into the middle class Established residency in the village of Küstelberg. The descendants of this Johann von Padberg and his son Johann Padberg migrated to many villages in the region of the Sauerland. During the economic stresses of the nineteenth century, descendants in many of these families sought the Promises of rich opportunities in both the United States and Canada. CHARLE M.8 TESREAU (JAMES E7, JOHN BAPTISTE FELIX6, JEAN BAPTISTE5 TESSEREAU, JOSEPH MARIE4 TESSEROT, JEAN BAPTISTE3 TESSERAU, ANTOINE2 TESSEROT, ANTOINE1) was born March 05, 1888, and died October 03, 1946. He married HELEN ELIZABETH BLAKE 1913 in New York, New York. Notes for CHARLE M. TESREAU: Played Base Ball for NY. New York Giants world series 1917. CHARLES MONROE "JEFF" TESREAU For the Deadball Era Biography Project by R. J. Lesch R. J. Lesch P.O. Box 8156 Des Moines, IA 50301 rjlesch_usa@yahoo.com John McGraw, the "Little Napoleon," liked his pitchers big and strong. Jeff Tesreau, at six feet two inches and 225 pounds, was McGraw's ideal moundsman. Charles Monroe Tesreau (TEZ-row) was born March 5, 1889. His family owned a farm near Ironton, Missouri. Tesreau completed eight years of school, typical in those days, and spent his time working on the farm and playing baseball. At 17, he towered over other boys his age, but was considered too big and awkward to play for the Ironton town team. Nearby Perryville had a team in the independent "Trolley League," which played in and around St. Louis. Tesreau set off for Perryville to work in a lead mine and to pitch for the mining company's team. His pitching soon attracted the attention of the Perryville squad, who signed him up for $50 a month. At Perryville in 1908, Tesreau routinely struck out half the batters he faced, and won 37 of the 43 games in which he pitched. The Austin club of the Texas League signed him to a contract. When Charlie Barrett, a scout for the St. Louis Browns, offered Tesreau a contract, Tesreau signed that also. Austin appealed to the National Commission and won the rights to Tesreau. Austin retained his rights for the next year, but rented him off to other teams. Tesreau got a lot of attention in 1909. Scouts liked his blazing fastball, but managers feared his inability to control it. Barrett, now managing Houston, got Tesreau on his squad and pitched him against the Browns during a series of exhibitions. Jimmy McAleer, the St. Louis manager, couldn't see Tesreau pitching in the big leagues, and passed him by. After Houston dismissed Barrett, Tesreau went hopping from team to team around the Texas League and elsewhere, earning the nickname "Bullfrog". During a trial with Detroit, errant Tesreau fastballs injured Germany Schaefer and Charlie Leary and earned him a trip back to Texas. In 1910, Tesreau managed to rein in his fastball enough to convince Shreveport to keep him for a full season. He posted a 15-14 record, with 179 strikeouts against only 71 walks. The New York Giants signed him and brought him to New York that September. Tesreau got into no games, but caught the eye of sportswriter Bill McBeth, who noticed Tesreau's resemblance to heavyweight boxer Jim Jeffries and nicknamed the big pitcher "Jeff". Tesreau picked up a stranger nickname in the spring of 1911. After going to spring training with the Giants, Tesreau traveled with the team through the South during a series of exhibition games. One day in the lobby of the Hotel Murphy in Richmond, Virginia, as that day's exhibition was rained out, Damon Runyon reportedly overheard Tesreau say, "It would be a great day for bear hunting. Bears always bite best when it's raining." Runyon and others promptly dubbed Tesreau "The Big Bear Hunter of the Ozarks." Later, as Tesreau told interviewers that he had never hunted bears ("quail are my specialty"), the nickname was shortened to "The Big Bear of the Ozarks", or simply, "The Ozark Bear." Tesreau came away from spring training with more than just nicknames. Up to this point, Tesreau's primary characteristics were his size and stamina, coupled with his steady personality and his solid work ethic. But he needed control and an out pitch. Wilbert Robinson, coaching the Giants' pitchers during spring training that year, suggested Tesreau try throwing the spitball. Tesreau worked on the spitball during the 1911 season, which he spent with Toronto of the Eastern League, under the tutelage of yet another former McGraw teammate, Joe Kelley. Tesreau continued to win and to improve his control. In 1912, Robinson worked extensively with Tesreau during spring training. Sharing the popular concern of the time that the spitball was hard on a pitcher's arm, Robinson helped Tesreau refine his delivery to take strain off his arm and to make full use of his muscular shoulders. When the team broke camp, Tesreau stayed with them. He made his major-league debut on April 12, 1912. McGraw started him in the Giants' second game of the season, at Washington Park in Brooklyn, on day so dark that the bleacherites lit fires (so they joked) to help the player see better. Giant infield errors helped Brooklyn win the game, 4-2, but Tesreau gave up only three hits and three walks and impressed the big city crowd. "Tesreau has curves which bend like barrel hoops and speed like lightning," gushed the New York Times. "He's just the kind of a strong man McGraw has been looking for." He impressed opponents as well. Johnny Evers said, "that big fellow has the best spitball in the National League. I think he is as good with the spitter as Ed Walsh." In the dead of summer, as the staff veterans cooled off, Tesreau picked up the slack. Of all the key games he won down the stretch, none was bigger than his no-hit game on September 6th, 1912 against Philadelphia. In all, Tesreau posted 17 wins against 7 losses in his rookie campaign. He also led the National League in the new earned run average category, with 1.96. McGraw picked Tesreau to pitch the first game of the 1912 World Series at the Polo Grounds, preferring to start his rookie in front of the home crowd. Tesreau lost a close matchup to Smoky Joe Wood in Game One, and lost a rematch in Game Four. In Game Seven, with the Giants down three games to two (with one tie) and Wood on the mound a third time, McGraw turned to his tenacious rookie once more. Tesreau rewarded his manager's confidence with a win to tie the Series at three games apiece. "It was the worst game I pitched," said Tesreau, "and the only one I won. That shows whether there is any luck or not in baseball." Tesreau was a Giants' mainstay for the next six years. In 1913, he went 22-13 for the pennant-winners. He celebrated that winter by marrying Helen Elizabeth Blake of New York. In 1914, while the rest of the Giants swooned late in that season to finish second to the Miracle Braves, Jeff led the staff with a 26-10 record, including eight shutouts, and in May narrowly missed a second no-hitter. In 1915, pitching for a last-place ball club, Tesreau posted a 19-16 record. The Tesreaus had a son, Charles, in 1916. Perhaps not coincidentally, Tesreau slipped a little in 1916 and 1917, even as the team rebounded. He reported to spring training 1918 in excellent shape, however, and seemed ready to resume his past level of success. Prior to spring training in 1918, McGraw asked Tesreau to take the pitchers, catchers and some out-of-condition players down South for early work. When McGraw arrived later, he asked Tesreau to report on the players' evening activities. Tesreau refused, claiming a man's behavior away from the ballpark was his own business. This touched off a feud between the two. Tesreau slumped early that season, and with McGraw now riding him harshly, he resigned from the Giants. Married and a father, Tesreau was deferred from the military draft for the World War. However, a work-or-fight order was in effect at the time, so Tesreau took a job with Bethlehem Steel. His last professional pitching appearances were for the Bethlehem team in the Steel League that year. While at Bethlehem, Tesreau struck up an acquaintance with Tom Keady, the company's recreational executive connected with Dartmouth College. Keady recommended Tesreau for the position of baseball coach at Dartmouth. Tesreau refused to report to the Giants in 1919, and McGraw refused to release or trade him. Tesreau coached Dartmouth that year. Boston eventually put together an enticing trade for McGraw, but by then Dartmouth wanted to make the position permanent. The Boston offer involved a substantially higher salary than the Dartmouth job. Tesreau, perhaps thinking of his own eighth-grade education, felt Hanover, New Hampshire would be a better environment for his young son. Tesreau spent the rest of his life coaching at Dartmouth, up until his death on September 24, 1946, five days after suffering a stroke during a fishing trip. He was a beloved figure on campus, as well as a successful coach. His career coaching record from 1919-46 was 379 wins, 264 losses, and 4 ties. His teams won the Quadrangular League championship in 1925, and the Eastern League championship in 1930, 1935, 1936 and 1938. The 1930 team featured future Yankees third baseman Red Rolfe (Dartmouth, 1931). The 1938 team featured Charles Tesreau (Dartmouth, 1938). She was known as "Aunt Ora" at Beechwell General Baptist church, because that's what all the other children heard her called. She taught the Sunbeam class for years on end (a preschool Sunday School class) and all her students learned the Bible stories by a flannel art display. She was a skilled seamstress, a homemaker and a great storyteller, with a "memory like an elephant" as her younger brother would say. Aunt Ora would often keep her nieces/nephews or great nieces/nephews overnight and we would be entertained with antimated songs, or true stories about our parents or relatives. She would be requested to repeat those stories on subsequent visits. She was loved by all her nieces and nephews and was like a second mother to many. She was a loving mother and faithful servant and now rests with our Savior, Lord Jesus Christ. Child of ORA TESREAU and JOHN HOPWOOD is: i. CAROLYN RUTH10 HOPWOOD, b. December 10, 1939; m.
