Obituary as appeared in the Athens review in 1935

Burl Tiner, 84, Buried Sunday at Pine Grove

Funeral services for Burl Tiner, 84, widely known resident of Henderson county who had made his home in the Pine Grove area for more than half a century, were held Sunday afternoon at the Davis cemetery, the Rev. D. R. Cartlidge, of Athens, officiating.
A large crowd including many citizens from Athens, was on hand for the services which were in charge of the Carroll-Lehr Funeral home.
Mr. Tiner had died Saturday afternoon at 5:20 following a two weeks illness with pneumonia.
Burl Addison Tiner was born in Missouri, August 1st, 1851, coming to Texas with his parents at the age of twelve. He had spent most of his life in the community in which he had died. Married three times, he was the father of eighteen children, ten of whom preceded him in death. He is survived by the eight living children.
A number of Athens business men with whom the deceased had dealt for half a century were among those attending the services, each attesting to the fact that "Burl Tiner was a man of integrity who never avoided an obligation."
The deceased had united with the Baptist Church 46 years ago at Pine Grove.

Marriage source: Henderson Co. Marriage Records Book 4, B 124. Burl & Martha McCool were married by J.C. McDonald, JP. The license was issued on Aug. 29, 1874 and recorded on Aug 31, 1874.

Death Record source: Henderson Co. Death Records: A.H. Easterling M.D. was the Burrell's physician and states that he was bedridden and died at 5:00 PM of Hypastalis Pneumonia as result of influenza. Undertaker was John Lehr, Athens, TX.

The Henderson Co. TX 1900 Census shows an additional person in the household, a white male named George Hays, age 50, born April 1850 in Arkansas. His father was born in N. Carolina, mother in Alabama. The Census shows Burrel and his family are family number 108. The next family, number 109 is Burrel's brother, George W. and his family. Do not know if they lived on the same land as Burrel or neighboring land.

  Notes for JOSEPH BURL TINER:
Source: SDI Master File @Rootsweb.com, Inc.
As of 6-22-01 there is a discrepancy on Joe's date of birth, the 7th and the 10th. However, at this time, the date being used is the one in the original Record of Births for Henderson Co., TX .

Chris Tiner Bearden remembers Uncle Joe (May 31, 2001): Grandpa Tiner had a brother everybody called Uncle Joe. He lived in the the Baxter Community. My Mother said that he was married early in his life, but for some reason he could not give his wife children so they divorced. He lived alone, east of Murrel Carnes store in Baxter, I think not too far from Jasper & Artie Miller. There should be information in the newspaper archives obituary column in Athens.

Brenda Tiner Hirrlinger remembers Uncle Joe (August 17, 2001):

She was born January 05, 1853 in Arkansas, and died December 08, 1885 in Henderson Co. TX. Hall, S.D.M.E.C.S.), daughter of CHARLES TROUBLEFIELD. She was born September 18, 1878 in Athens, Henderson Co., TX, and died October 10, 1917 in Tupelo, Coal Co., OK.

Notes for J
ASPER NEWTON TINER:
Jasper N was still in Edmund's household as of the 1870 Cooke Co. Census.
Records show he & Millie (from Arkansas) were married as of the 1880 Cooke Co. Census with a 2 year old son William and a 5 month old daughter Rosa.

Also Melissa (Jasper's sister) is shown living in their household doing housework. She is 16.
** By this time the other brothers are grown and moved away from home.

According to census, Millie's father is from North Carolina and her mother is from Missouri.

Note: The Cooke Co. Texas 1880 Census shows Edmund & Lucinda, (Jasper & Melissa's) parents as place of birth unknown and Melissa born in Texas. This is an error, we have documentation otherwise. --BTH 9-26-00

Jasper's children: there are nine. I have tried to do a time line with what information I have from County and family records. There are two wives, Millie and Carrie. However, more research needs to be done because the childrens date of birth does not line up with the mother they are said to belong to. If the marriage and death dates are correct, there could be another wife, or children born between marriages. Since this is so difficult, I have put the nine children in as best I could. My computer is very unhappy because these siblings do not compute. I also have the spouses and children of all of Jasper's kids, but will add them later when I get everybody paired up where they should be. Looks like there is a trip to a couple of counties in OK just over the horizon. Anybody want to go?

At the time Jasper Newton passed away, his daughter Hattie and her husband Walter Humphreys applied for a Petition for Letters of Administration to administer Jasper's estate to the children.
The children are shown as: John Tiner age residence: Coal Co., OK
Claud Tiner age 25 residence: " "
Frank Tiner age 23 residence: " "
Rosa Clark nee Tiner age residence: deceased
Hattie Humphreys nee Tiner age 16 residence: Coal Co., OK
Carroll Tiner age 12 residence: " "
May Tiner age 9 residence: " "
residence: P.O. Tupelo, Okla
Henry Tiner age residence: Baxter, TX

The estate was approximately 30 acres, valued at $900.00.
