  • Tovrea Castle in Phoenix, AZ (19 KB)
    The Tovrea castle of Phoenix was purchased by Edward Ambrose Tovrea in 1931. Edward, born 20 March 1861 was the son of Arthur T and Rosa Jane Hood Tovrea. Although the Tovreas of Phoenix are very distantly related to this writer, the castle has become a favorite symbol of all Tovrea/Tovery researhers across the nation.

    Tillie Smith born 1869 died 1951. Married Thomas A Tovrea 1886 in Lucas Co., IA. Their children were: Agusta, Thomas, Charlotte, George, Frank, Dewey, Myrtle, Willim and Bertha. After Thomas passed away in 1906, she married James Dale in 1913. Tillie was born in Baden Germany and was the daughter of Frank Smith & Agusta Straloch.

    Helen Green was born 1904 in Indiana, and died 1985 in San Diego, CA. She married Phillip Edward Tovrea about 1918 in AZ. Their children were: Edward Sr., Phillip Jr., and Helen Adele. Helen was the decorator of the famed "Stockyard Restaurant" in Phoenix, and in her later years she tended her son Phil Jr. who had MS.

    A.T. Tovrea was the son of Bartley & Mathilda Low Tovrea from Sparta, Randolph Co., IL. A.T. married Rosa Jane Hood 1855 in Sparta. They were the parents of 10 children: John, Charles S.     I visited the restaurant once when I was a child, about 1958, and was very impressed to see my name on the china. So needles to say, I was very excited when I found this photo of a platter. It was for sale at an antique shop. I believe that our Daniel Tovrea purchased this one!   • Edward Ambrose Tovrea 1861-1932 (101 KB)
    Edward was the son of Arthur T and Rosa Jane Hood Tovrea of Sparta, Randolph Co., IL. He and Lillian, his first wife had 5 sons, one of which was Phillip Edward. Edward Ambrose's second wife was Della Gillespie. There were no children from this marriage. Edward was the owner/founder of the famed "Tovrea Castle" and the Tovrea stock yards in Phoenix, AZ.     Ace Pilot during WWII, Phillip Tovrea, Jr. received the Silver Star. He was the son of Philip Edward & Helen Green Tovrea. Phil Jr. died of Multiple Sclerosis in 1981.

    I found this photo on a visit to the original homestead of my Tovreas in Durango, Colorado many years. Because of the estimated date it was taken and the location listed on the back of the photo card, I believe this to be a child of Thomas A and "Tillie" Smith Tovrea. The photo appears to have been taken about 1898 in Ottumwa, Wappello county, IA and Thomas and his family were the only know Tovrea family that were in the Ottumwa area during that time period. Because of the neclace, I believe the child is female but can not positively identify the child.
