As a child, Bernard Carlin Everly lived with Anna Maria for a while when his parents felt he was being difficult; he said she was one of the most giving, caring people he had ever known, but that she had quite a temper. He and she would sit and watch the horse-drawn caskets being taken to a nearby cemetery. Anna Maria became angry whenever one of the horses defecated on the road in front of her house, and she stopped the funeral procession to demand that the funeral director take notice of what the horse had done.
