Down Your Street (ISBN0907115160) by Sarah Payne in chapter 14 about Rose Crescent in Cambridge page 90 the following two paragraphs:-
In September 1930, Frank Hall, who lived at a house called "The Cabin" in Hills Road, was paying a rent of £101 per annum for the lock-up shop and at the back which he was using for his tailor's and robe-maker's business. In the same month Arthur Edward Twinn rented the basement and first and upper floors at £100 per annum from Gonville and Caius. Two years later, in August 1932, H. R. Aldiss became the new tenant for the ground floor. his rent was £101 per annum, the lease to run for "20 3/4 years". H. R. Aldiss died in October 1946, but the family business continued there.
Lodging house keeper Mrs Twinn was quite a character in the Crescent. She obviously packed the students in, because a letter from the college to her husband dated 13th May 1931 alludes to some alterations to the rooms: "Dear Sir, I understand that you are thinking of dividing a large bedroom into two rooms. This is a matter towards the cost of which no contribution can be made by the college, but I am willing that you do no damage and that you restore the room to its original size at the end of your tenancy if required to do so by the landlord. " The Twinn's son Mr E. J. Twinn, of 4 Holland Street, married the daughter of Mrs Fox, another well-liked Rose Crescent landlady, who rented the basement and upper floors of no. 5 from Almonds's the dairy. He and his wife went to live with his mother-in-law when they were married. When their son was born in 1927, they were told he was the first child to be born in Rose Crescent for about 100 years.
