1 Thomas FRANCIS ---------------------------------------- Labourer. I have THIS family 1841 at Priory St in the parish of St James, Colchester. Thomas FRANCIS / 45 Mary / 45 Rachael / 15 Sarah / 13 William / 10 Abraham / 7** George / 2 Emma? / 2months? ** 1862 Kelly`s Directory lists an Abraham Kershaw Francis living at East Bay. Also living at East Bay is an Alfred Francis. 1848 White`s Directory of Essex lists: Shopkeeper, Francis Thomas, Priory St. Colchester. This road is just off East Hill. In 1851 (Colchester Index) I find: Mary Ann FRANCIS / 56 / at St James with her are: William / 20 George / 12 1851 census says that Mary Ann, aged 56 and a widow is shown as a "shop keeper" for her occupation. She is at the same address in 1841 and 1851 Sarah FRANCIS / 22 is at St Botolphs probably working. No sign of Thomas, Rachael (who is probably married), Abraham, or Emma? By 1861 (Colchester Index) the only ones I can find in St James are: Mary Ann FRANCIS / 66 George / 22. TRYING TO PROVE THIS IS THE CORRECT THOMAS FRANCIS. Longshot: possibly born 1797 at Wickham Bishops, who after his baptism disappears with his parents (James and Mary) and siblings (James and Mary Ann). Spouse: ? ? HIS niece, Dorothy Mills, (nee Morgan) looked after HIM in his latter years. They lived in a tiny cottage off Brick St. near the farm where Albert worked. The farm was White Gate Farm, Fordham Heath and Albert was a horseman for Bert Grey. They were both placed in St Albrights in Stanway around 1962 (her first). She went to Canada with brother Harry, sister Mabel & nephew Claude. 1901-2 she was a dressmaker. 1912 she was living at 519 Albert st. (A boarding House). 1914 she was at 166 Spring St. 1916 she was at 168 March St. 1919 she was at 99 Grace St, where she lived for the rest of her life. NOTES FROM A RESEARCHER LIVING IN SAULT ST MARIE 2002: "The house at 99 Grace Street is now torn down to make way for a parking lot. But I did note that where the house of Edythe was and where Harry lived were probably at that time only about a minute walk. Depending on how things looked back then they may have actually been able to see each others home. The Grace street area of the city is now a run down district and not a very good neighborhood. While the Biggings Street area is unique in that it is so narrow that two cars couldn't pass each other without pulling over on the sidewalk. I don't think there is another street in the city that narrow. In case you are not aware of the Sault Ferry, it was a ferry that crossed the river from Sault Ste. Marie Ontario to Sault Ste. Marie Michigan on the American side of the river that forms the border between our two countries. This ferry operated until some time around 1963-64."
