About Our Family Research

Polly McCauthy Green was the mother of Henryetta Green, wife of Clayborne Green. In a visit with Ida(Washington) Walker, Daughter of Poly Washington and cousin to my father James Washington(b.d. 8/1923), I was told that Polly Green was from Port Hudson, Louisiana and her father was a white man with the last name of McCauthtrie (Cousin Ida wasn't sure about the spelling).

Visited the Atlanta area National Archives July, 1998 and found 1880 Soundex #252. Census #453. Lee Washington and family were listed on vol.5, E.D. 116, Sheet 9, Line 26. His age was listed as 21 yrs., birthplace: Louisiana, occupation: farmer. His wife Henrietta was listed as being 19 yrs., Louisiana birthplace.
Two children were listed: George, 4 yrs, and Polly, 1yr.

Both Lee(Papa Lee) and Henrietta(Mamma Retta) listed as being non-readers/writers. Henrietta father was born in Mississippi, her mother's birthplace was Louisiana. George's father's b.p. was listed as Miss.; unable to decipher Polly's father's b.p.(looks like Tenn.)

Found the Washingtons in the 1900 East Feliciana Parish,U.S. Census, Ward #1,Page 140a,image 24, enumerated 15th June. Henryetta was a mother of 14 children, 11 living at the time of the Census. Seven younger children were still in the home: Lernna b.d. Aug.1884, Idella-May 1886, Clara-Nov.1888, James(Boise)-Apr. 1892, Lewis(Manny)-Feb.1895, Oscar(Gent)-Sept.1896, Henryetta (Big Nettie)-Oct.1899
In the dwelling before Lee's family was another Washington. His first appears to start with a 'G', he was born in Aug. 1877 (22yrs) and is listed as a farm laborer. (Probably son George)

The family listed on the 1880 Census just before Lee and Henrietta was Clayborne and Polly Green (Henrietta's mother). Clayborne was Louisiana born, age 49 yrs; Polly was Louisiana born, age 40 and was listed as physically "confined".

Family Photos
  • Goodhope Freewill Baptist Church (222 KB)
My cousin Clarence Washington and I found the home church to the Washington Family on our July, 2003 trip to Slaughter and Lindsay, Louisiana. Founded in 1892 by Rev. J. Hamilton. Remodeled 1903 by Rev. J.A.Washington.
  • Goodhope FBC's Cornerstone (273 KB)
The plaster-like Cornerstone we found on the church was weathered and beaten down to the point of making it tough to discern several letters and dates. Cousin Ida Washington told me that Rev.Hamilton baptised Grandfather "Boise" Washington. Rev. J.A. Washington could have been Lee Washington's brother.
  • Cousin Clarence Washington (July, 2003) (252 KB)
Clarence is shown looking at the unmarked gravesite of his grandfather, Louis "Manny" Washington. We were not able to find any other Washingtons in the Goodhope FBC's cemetary.

In July of 2003, my cousin Clarence Washington and I visited the ancestrial home of the Washington Family. We not only found the ancestrial church of our family but found out that our great-grandfather, Lee Washington, was one of the founding fathers of the church.
