1607 The Virginia Company of London founded the first permanent English settlement in America
at Jamestown.

1624 Virginia was established as a crown colony with an elected General Assembly.

1650 Settlers from Virginia moved into the Albemarle area of northeast North Carolina forming
the permanent English settlement in this area. The territory was under the control of the
Lords Proprietors and their descendants.

18th Century

1700 - Virginia was the largest English colony, with a population of about 58,000.

1710 Passes across the Blue Ridge Mountains leading from Virginia into the Shenandoah Valley
were discovered.

1713 The South Carolina region separated from North Carolina and became a Royal Colony.
Records were kept at Charleston.

1734 John Leech was born in Ireland.

1740 - Matthew Hawkins was born, probably in Virginia

1743 - William Blacketer was born in Virginia

1744 Johannes Michael Hablutzel was born in Alsace Lorraine

1746 Lunenburg County, Virginia was formed with Lunenburg as the county seat.

1749 - Culpeper County, Virginia was formed from Orange County with Culpeper as county seat.

1750 - A passage through the Cumberland Mountains was discovered by an explorer for the
Loyal Land Company and named Cumberland Gap.

1750 Anna Katrina Van Veigle was born in York County, Pennsylvania.

1751 - English settlers visited the area of Frankfort Virginia/Kentucky.

1754 - French & Indian War began. (1754-1763)

1755 - William Reynolds (1) was born..

1761 - Saint James Parish (Virginia) was formed when Cumberland Parish was divided.

1761 - Matthew Hawkins married Hannah Maxwell

1762 - Vincent Lockman born in Orange County, North Carolina.

1763 French & Indian War ended when Great Britain defeated France. The Treaty of
Paris gave Britain all of North America east of the Mississippi.

1764 Mecklenburg County, Virginia was formed from the part of Lunenburg that was
Saint James Parish. Boydton became the county seat.

1764 Johannes Michael Hablutzel sailed from Rotterdam on the Chance to Philadelphia.

1764 - Benjamin Duncan (2) born in Franklin County, Virginia /Kentucky.

1765 - William Abbott (1) was born May 13 in Virginia.

1769 - Henry Blacketer born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.

1770 William Blacketer (1) purchases 100 acres of land in Mecklenburg County, VA.

1770 Anna Katrina Van Veigle was born on June 15, in York County Pennsylvania.

1772 - Susannah Hawkins was born in Virginia

1774 - Harrod's Town (Harrodsburg) was settled by Captain James Harrod. This was
the first European settlement in the area now known as Kentucky.

1775 - Revolutionary War began because of the British proclamation of 1773 which restricted
settlement west of the Appalachians. (1775-1783)

1775 The trail that passed through the Cumberland Gap, referred to as the "Wilderness Road",
was marked by Daniel Boone which opened access from Virginia into Kentucky.

1775 - Fort Harrod was built.

1776 - Virginia legislature at Williamsburg declared Kentucky a county of Virginia. It was
known as Kentucky County, Virginia until 1789. Harrodsburg became the county seat
of Kentucky County, Virginia/Kentucky.

1776 - Frankfort Virginia/Kentucky was established as a town.

1777 Katherine Hoblit was born February 25.

1779 Part of Virginia became part of North Carolina

1779 James Leech was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina

1780 - Settlement began in Frankfort Virginia/Kentucky

1782 - The Commonwealth of Virginia passed a law, which made three counties,
become the District of Kentucky; Lincoln, Jefferson and Fayette.

1783 Revolutionary War ended and the thirteen colonies won independence from Great Britain.

1783 Vincent Lockman married Ann Kirkland in Orange County, North Carolina.

1780 - Settlement established called Kaufman's Station at the site where Lawrenceburg,
Kentucky is now located.

1780 Lincoln County, Kentucky was formed, Harrodsburg became it's county seat.

1784 Virginia formally ceded its claims north on the Ohio River to the United States.

1784 - Elijah Colvin (1) was born in Virginia/Kentucky

1786 Mercer County, Kentucky was formed, Harrodsburg became it's county seat.

1787 - Kentucky's first newspaper, the Kentucky Gazette was founded in Lexington.

1787 - William Blacketer (1) died in Mecklenburg, Virginia. (age 44).

1788 South Carolina became a state. The state government was moved to Columbia.
Virginia ratified the United States Constitution and became a state.

1788 - William Abbott (1) married Catherine Hoblit in Frankfort Kentucky.

1788 Olive Lucinda Lockman was born.

1789 - George Washington was inaugurated as the 1
st president.

1789 - Woodford County, originally a county in Virginia, was formed in 1789 from Fayette County.
Versailles was named the county seat.

1789 - Benjamin Duncan Jr. married Mary Bennett

1790 William Reynolds resided in Laurens County, South Carolina until 1810.

1792 Kentucky's became a separate state. The 15
th state to enter the federal union.
Frankfort was named its capitol.

1792 Washington County, Kentucky was
formed from Nelson County. Springfield
became the county seat.

1794 - Susannah Hawkins married Henry Kilby.

1795 Johannes Michael Hablutzel/Hoblit died May 3, 1795 in Kentucky.

1796 The road through the Cumberland Gap was widened enough to allow Conestoga
Wagons to travel on it and officially named The Wilderness Road.

1798 Katherine Hoblit married William Abbott (1) January 18, 1798 in Woodford County, Kentucky.

19TH Century Timeline


1800 Kentucky's second constitution became effective and provided for the election
of the state governor and members of the state senate by direct popular vote.

1800 Henry Blacketer was living with the Shawnee Indians. He is said to have had at least one son by his
Indian wife Little Willow.

1800 - William Reynolds (2) was born in South Carolina.

1803 Margaret "Peggy" Abbott was born.


1805 Vincent Lockman and his family along with the Blacketer family moved from Virginia by
wagon train and settled in Harrodsburg, Mercer County, Kentucky.

1806 Henry Blacketer married Olive Lockman in Mercer County, Kentucky.

1806 James Leech married Martha Drennon in Livingston County, Kentucky.

1807 Vincent Lockman Blacketer was born in Mercer County, Kentucky.

1811- Ann Kirkland, wife of Vincent Lockman & mother of Olive Lockman, died.

1812 War of 1812-1815

1812 Elijah Colvin Sr. married Martha Jane "Patsy" Turner in Mercer County, Kentucky.

1816 Benjamin Duncan married Susannah Hawkins Kilby in Franklin County, Kentucky.

1817 The site formally known as Kaufman's Station opened a post office which became
known as Lawrenceburgh.

1817 Matthew Duncan was born in Franklin County, Kentucky.

1817 Vincent Lockman married Polly Hare June 25
th in Jackson County, Indiana. They had
no children and were divorced in 1819.

1818 Elijah Colvin Jr. was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky.

1819 James McElhaney Leech was born in Caldwell County, Kentucky.

1820 Benjamin Duncan died in Franklin County (Lawrenceburg), Kentucky.

1820 - Matthew Hawkins died in Culpeper County, Virginia.

1821 - William Reynolds (2) Margaret Abbott married in Mercer County, Kentucky.

1822 William Reynolds (1) died in Mercer County, Kentucky.

1827 Anderson County, Kentucky was formed from Franklin, Mercer & Washington counties.
Lawrenceburgh was renamed Lawrenceburg & named county seat.

1829 Vincent Lockman married Christine Miller Hagan in Jackson County, Indiana.

1833 William Abbott died in Kentucky.

1835 Maria Reynolds was born in Anderson County, Kentucky.

1838 Trail of Tears (1838-1839)

1840 Matthew Duncan married Virginia Ann Utterback in Anderson County, Kentucky.

1841 Elijah Colvin Jr. married Cynthia Richardson in Kentucky.

1843 Vincent Lockman died in Indiana.

1844 Katherine Hoblit died.

1845 Susannah Hawkins Kilby Duncan died in Anderson County, Kentucky.

1846 Congress declared war on Mexico. (Mexican War 1846-1848)

1846 William Pendleton Reynolds, eldest son of William Reynolds & Margaret Abbott,
enlisted at Lawrenceburg Kentucky and served in Co. C KY Foot Volunteers.

1847 William Pendleton Reynolds died February 22 in the Battle of Buena Vista.

1848 Allen Stewart Blacketer was born in Boyle County, Kentucky.

1848 Annie Colvin was born in Washington County, Kentucky.

1848 Dewitt Timmons was born in Weakly County, Tennessee.

1854 Matthew Duncan married Nancy Jane Moore in Anderson County, Kentucky.

1855 Henry Blacketer died from Typhoid Fever September 2
nd in Mercer County, Kentucky.

1855 Olive Lockman Blacketer died from Typhoid Fever October 2
nd in Mercer County, Kentucky.

1857 Matthew Duncan married Maria Reynolds in Anderson County, Kentucky.

1860 Elijah Colvin Sr. died in Lincoln County, Kentucky.

1860 South Carolina was the first to secede from the Union.

1861 - Most of Virginia joined the Confederacy. Fifth western counties broke off and were
admitted to the Union as the state of West Virginia in 1863.

1861 Kentucky state legislature issued a proclamation declaring that the state would be neutral in
the conflict of the American Civil War and would take no part in the fighting. Recruiters
from both the Union & the Confederacy enlisted Kentuckians. (Civil War 1861-1865)

1861 Addison C. Blacketer & David H. Blacketer, sons of Vincent Lockman Blacketer, enrolled on
October 28 in Co. H, I Reg't Kentucky Calvary and served in the Union Army for 3 years.
James P Blacketer, their oldest brother, enrolled and served as a Confederate Soldier.

1862 After the Confederate invasion of 1862 the legislature aligned Kentucky with The Union.

1865 Blacks became legally free in Kentucky when the 13
th Amendment to the Constitution
became law in December 1865.

1868 South Carolina readmitted to the Union. Districts were now called counties.

1868 William Reynolds (2) died in Kentucky.

1870 Virginia was readmitted to the Union.

1871 Allen Stewart Blacketer married Annie Colvin in Springfield, Kentucky.

1871 Dewitt Timmons married Sarah K. McCollough in Graves County, Kentucky.

1871 Joseph E J Duncan was born in Anderson County, Kentucky.

1875 Nancy Leech was born in Graves County, Kentucky.

1875 Arthur S Timmons was born in Weakly County, Tennessee.

1877 Luticia Blacketer born in Anderson County, Kentucky.

1889 Margaret Abbott died in Kentucky.

1891 Dewitt Timmons died in Graves County, Kentucky.

1895 Elijah Colvin Jr. died in Mercer County, Kentucky.

1898 Spanish-American War

1899 Mathew Duncan died in Anderson County, Kentucky.

1899 Joseph E J Duncan married Luticia Blacketer in Anderson County, Kentucky.


1899 Arthur S Timmons married Nancy Leech in Graves County, Kentucky.
