Millings Family

Updated January 16, 2006

About Our Family Research

My father, Robert (Reuben) Saffer Millings married my mother Francis Mary Montanaro on December 6, 1941, in New York. I am researching the Millings family, and the Saffer family on my father's side. Both families initially emmigrated from Russia (what was then incorporated as Russia)to England. My grandmother was Fanny Saffer, my father's mother, who I did know. She was married to Lawrence Millings, my grandfather, and I did not know him. Fanny was born January 1893, in Leeds, England, where her parents resided at the time, at 15 Brunswick St. My father was born on May 13, 1915, in Middlesborough, England, lived in Middlesborough, Leeds and London, as a child. He later (age 13) went to Canada with my grandmother, and they eventually came to America, and he became a naturalized citizen, she did not. Marks Millings, was Lawrence Millings' father. Lawrence married my grandmother, Fanny Saffer. Marks was from Rumshishok, and his wife Rachel(Solomons)was born in London, England, but her parents (Harris Solomons and Emily Solomons) were from Rumshishok. I believe that Marks Millings emmigrated from Russia to England about 1882, as he is not listed in the 1881 English census. Marks was a master tailor. Lawrence was born in 1891. I know Lawrence had siblings. Both Marks and Rachel are buried in Gildersome Cemetery, Leeds. The Solomons eventually moved to Leeds, England, from London. I don't know when they came to England, but believe it was about 1870-71, as the family is listed in the 1871 British Census. Harris Solomons was a tailor. Fanny's (my grandmother) parents were Joseph and Amelie (nickname was Millie) Saffer, who emmigrated from Shilel, Kovno gubernia, Russia to England. Amelie's maiden name was Freid. On Joseph Saffer's British naturalization file papers, he was naturalized Dec. 1894, at the time he was 34 years old,and a tailor, born Feb. 1, 1860, in ”Shillel”. The papers show he was from Shillel. His parents, who I assume stayed in Russia, were Abraham Louis Saffer and Sarah Annie Saffer, no maiden name listed (Annie, sounds like an odd Jewish name, could be Ani, or some other). He was a master tailor by trade. Both Joseph and Amelie are buried in Gildersome United Hebrew Cemetery, Leeds. Joseph and Millie had several children listed on Joseph's 1894 naturalization papers: Nathan..13, Sarah..12, Hyman..10, Jacob..8, (those four all born in Russia), and Isaac..3, and my grandmother Fanny..1 year old (both Isaac and Fanny were born in Leeds), England. For the five years prior the family lived at: From 1888 to July 1890-56 Copenhagen St., Leeds. From July 1890 to November 1890-Mason St. Leeds. From November 1890 to September 1893-St Albans St. Leeds, and from September 1893 to July 1894-15 Brunswick St., Leeds. Some of my Saffers were also from Rumshishok. I am also researching my maternal side, my mother Frances Montanaro was born 6/25/1919, to Frank and Mary (Bianco) Montanaro. Both were from the Naples area, Italy. Frank was born 2/1880, Mary was born 2/1883. Frank was a shoemaker in NYC. Frank arrived via Ellis Island in 1900 at the age of 20. Mary arrived via Ellis Island in 1890 at the age of 7. Frank and Mary were married in New York, in 1905. Frank's father's name was Giovanni, his mother's name was Antoinette Del Bene. I leave this historical legacy of my family, both paternal and maternal, to my children, grandchild and future generations. I endeavor to continue to research and record the history of the Millings family, and the Jewish ancestral roots, within. I wish to leave significant information to my childen, grandchildren, and to generations to come, in order to educate them on their Jewish heritage, as one can never do enough to build upon existing Jewish familial foundations. I, Rayna Eliana, am a daughter of Israel...I simply, must BE, and AM.
