Notes for S
IMEON DEMARANVILLE:
In February of 1778, when he was almost 16 years of age, Simeon D' Meranville of Freetown was drafted by Captain Norton who commanded a militia company. He was stationed at Fall River for 6 weeks about 5 miles above Howland's ferry, commanded by Sergeant Ichabod Reed. In May of the same year, he was enlisted by Colonel Thomas Kempton? for 5 months to go to Rhode Island. Instead, he served in the fort below Fair Haven village under Lt. Gordon, who commanded a regular artillary unit in the State service after Lt. Metcalf was killed. D'Meranville was marched from Freetown to Dartmouth on an alarm in the militia commanded by Captain Benjamin Lawrence. He then volunteered with many others from Freetown to go to Rhode Island and participated in that battle. In the following year, he enlisted for 3 months under Lt. Peregrine White in Freetown and was in the fort at Butts Hill. Next he served 5 months under Captain Elihu Gifford at Dartmouth and Rhode Island in the regiment of Colonel Claghorn. Simeon also served as a substitute for his father, Lewis D'Meranville in the fort at Fair Haven from October 1778 to May 1779. His father wished to go home to his family and his officers accepted Simeon to serve as a substitute. Simeon was born 10 June 1762.
