Notes for HAROLD EDWARD WILSON:
Harold Edward Wilson Sr.
1898-1989
He was born on February 12, 1898 in Hartford, Connecticut to Mamie Clarabelle Sizer and Edward Eugene Wilson. Harold tried to enlist in the army and navy during World War I but they would not accept him because he wore glasses. He finally received a notice to report for service but it was the day before the armistice was signed and it was rescinded.
Harold was a civil engineer and worked for the Water Company, which is now known as the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC). The company supplied city water for Hartford and many surrounding towns. He retired on March 1, 1962 after over 44 years of service.
During the 1920's he rode an Indian motorcycle and he was also the leader of Wilson's Jazz Orchestra. Harold played violin and the orchestra also had a piano player, trumpet player and a drummer. They played at clubs on the Berlin Turnpike and throughout the area. The orchestra played for one season at Doyle's Dancing Hall which was located at the corner of Union Place and Asylum Street in Hartford. Each musician was paid $3 per night and they worked on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. He was also a member of the Governor's Footguard for many years.
Harold met his wife when he was on a surveying gang near the Empire Laundry on Church Street in Hartford. Irene Charlotte Southwick was employed at the laundry and was standing outside the door; he began flirting and asked her out. They met in the summer of 1920 and were married in Hartford on April 9, 1921. Harold and Irene Wilson had the following children:
Harold Edward Jr.
January 1, 1922-May 29, 1993
Richard Griswald
August 20, 1928 -
Lois Clarabelle
March 5, 1931 -
He always liked to go to clubs and to the movies. Even in his late 80's, he would put on a suit and take the bus "uptown" to the center of Hartford to have a beer and see old acquaintances. Harold never owned a car or house but he always cut a distinguished figure in any crowd. He was 5'11" tall, had a full head of white hair and ramrod straight bearing. After his wife died in 1980, Harold continued to live in the same apartment at 57 Crown Street in Hartford with his son, Dick. A while after that, he started dating and had a standing weekly assignation with a girlfriend who lived in the city.
In February of 1988, he turned 90 years old and his children and grandchildren threw a party at his apartment. He seemed to turn a corner when he reached that age and later that year he went into a nursing home in Windsor, Connecticut. Harold often complained of health problems during his life and one of his former co-workers once said that asking him how are you was a half hour conversation. In fact, he was quite strong and even survived an operation for a stomach aneurysm when he was over 90. Harold was 91 when he died at the Mountain View Convalescent Home in Windsor, Connecticut on December 25, 1989. He was cremated but a head stone was to be placed in the Sizer Wilson cemetery plot at the Zion Hill Cemetery in Hartford.
