Hi! We are researching the family of Dr. THOMAS P. WIATT (or WYATT) who was born in Virginia in 1810. He moved on to Mississippi sometime prior to 1844, when he married REBECCA SNELL, a native of Mississippi. They lived in Jasper and Perry Counties, Mississippi, and had at least six children together.
We are told that Dr. Wyatt was an officer in the CSA Medical Corps during the Civil War.
The only other tidbit that we know about our ancestry is that the family is originally from England and was said to have been wealthy (of course!), and involved in shipping. The family legend is that our particular founding father was slated to be the heir to the family shipping business and fortune but ran away to America instead. (There must be an interesting story there!)
We know that the family originally spelled the name as WIATT, but in the 1800's they began using the WYATT spelling instead. We also know that there are several runaways in the family, so that appears to be a family trait! And further, the previous two generations were merchants, which would be natural if they came from a business-oriented family background. So there may be some actual truth to the family legend, though no telling how much.
Some of the affiliated names that we are researching are: BRADLEY, BYNUM, GRAVES, MAGEE, MARTIN, RAINS, RODGERS, SNELL, THIGPEN, VAN ZANDT, WARREN, WINDHAM, all of Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia.
