Generation No. 1
1. (THOMAS C.?)1 WIATT He married __________ CHISWELL?.
In the 1850 census for Jasper County, Mississippi, we find a Thomas C. WYATT living near our Thomas P. WYATT. Since our Thomas P. WYATT named his son Thomas "C"., it is highly likely that this gentleman is our Thomas P.'s father. We know from the Mississippi Census that Thomas P. was born in Virginia about 1810; therefore, his father or grandfather must have still been living in Virginia at least until 1810. Upon checking the Virginia Censuses for the time period immediately prior to 1810, I have found only one Thomas WYATT, and he is listed as a Head of Household on the 1785 Census of Halifax County, Virginia, with a family consisting of four persons. Going a step further, in a bibliography of family histories having to do with various WYATT lines, I found the following:
The Wyatt Family Records, by Lucile Rebecca (Douglass) Wyatt.
The descendants of E. J. Wyatt, of Pittsylvania County, Va., and his lineal
descendants from John
Wyatt, early pioneer of Halifax Co., who is presumably the descendant
of Adam Wyatt through the
Rev. Haute (Hawte) Wyatt, who emigrated from England to Va. in 1621.
I thought it interesting that our ancestor John E. WYATT has the middle initial of the emigrant ancestor, E. J. WYATT, especially because I have not yet found any other men from the older generations who bore a name beginning with "E." Needless to say, finding a copy of this book is high on my list of priorities!
The maternal name of CHISWELL is strictly a guess. Because at a number of descendants are given the name “CHISWELL" as their middle name, it is conceivable that this was a surname from a female ancestor. Significantly, in 1870 there was a man by the name of CHISWELL WYATT living in Campbell County, Virginia, our WIATT's home state.
The name may, however, simply have been given in admiration of Col. John CHISWELL, an early and influential settler of Virginia. The name CHISWELL is well known and highly respected in Virginia. The family is listed among the first settlers of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, along with such illustrious Virginia families as the MERRIWETHERs and the LEWISes. Col. John CHISWELL of England discovered the lead mining potential in Wythe County, Virginia in the 1750's and arranged for Welsh and English funding of a mining venture. The family eventually spread into Tennessee, West Virginia, and other Southern states, but has remained seated primarily in Maryland and Virginia. It will be interesting to discover what our connection to the CHISWELL family actually is!
Child of (THOMAS C.?) WIATT and __________
CHISWELL? is:
2. i. THOMAS P.2 WYATT, M.D.,
b. 1810, Virginia.
Generation No. 2
2. THOMAS P. WYATT,
M.D. (THOMAS C.?1 WIATT)
was born 1810 in Virginia. He married REBECCA
SNELL 1844 in Jasper
County, Mississippi. She was born 1828 in Mississippi.
The book, The Thigpen Tribe, which recounts the history of the THIGPEN family, states that Thomas WYATT was an officer in the Confederate medical corps during the Civil War. He is not listed with the rest of his family in the 1860 Census of Turnerville, Lauderdale County, Mississippi, which may indicate that he had already left for the battlefields. T.C., the oldest son, would leave for battle within a year of the census and would be blinded in both eyes at the Battle of Chickamauga.

Notes for REBECCA SNELL:
Rebecca was probably part of the SNELL family
that immigrated into Mississippi from the German settlement in Orangeburgh,
South Carolina. Some of them appear to have come to Jasper County,
Mississippi, while others went to Pike County. A number of the extended
family moved on into Sabine County, Louisiana where we find them in the
1870’s.
A SNELL family next door to the WYATTs in 1860 is listed below. The head of the family, J. M. Snell (James Morris Snell), is of the right age to have been Rebecca's brother:

(Susan may have been Mary's mother, but if so, she must have remarried, for Mary's maiden name was DOWNES. The other possibility is that Susan was James's mother and therefore probably the mother of our Rebecca, but this is difficult to reconcile with the data given in the various censuses. The 1840 census shows a Susan SNELL as head of household for a family that included 2 male children and 3 female children. Rebecca and James fit the age groups for these children. This Susan was supposedly 50-60 years old when the 1840 Census was taken. This seems a little old to be the mother of a 10-15 year old boy and a 5-10 yr-old daughter, but it is not impossible; however, it seems likely that the census taker may have intended to put his mark in the 40-50 slot. If this IS the same Susan living with James in 1860, the census taker must indeed have made a mistake back in 1840. Also, Susan would have to have remarried to have taken the name RABORN. However, in 1870, a Susan SNELL, b. 1797 in SC, aged 73 yrs, is living near the rest of the SNELL family in Sabine County, Louisiana; this lady appears to be the same Susan SNELL of the 1840 census. Had she indeed remarried, it would be strange for her to drop her new married name of RABORN and go back to her old married name of SNELL. We may well be speaking of two different Susans, possibly even three. So for the moment, the mystery remains -- who is SUSAN RABORN?)

It is possible that Chiz married a second time on April 28, 1892, to Catherine Leatherwood, for a marriage is recorded in Lauderdale County on this date for a couple with the names "T.C. Wyatt and Catherine Leatherwood."
At this point we are aware of only one of Chiz's children, ANN, who
was born in Mississippi in 1879.
4. JOHN E. WIATT / WYATT 3 (THOMAS P.2, THOMAS C.?1 WIATT) was born December 12, 1849 in Mississippi and died August 6, 1923 in Mississippi. He is buried in the cemetery of the First Baptist Church in Old Williamsburg, Covington County, Mississippi. He married MARGARET A. “MAGGIE” BRADLEY January 12, 1883 in Ellisville, Jones County, Mississippi, daughter of JAMES MARION BRADLEY, Jr. and NANCY CAROLINE BYNUM. She was born February 28, 1857 in Perry County, Mississippi, and died December 2, 1944 in Mississippi. Her family was among the earliest settlers of the Mississippi Territory. Among Maggie’s ancestors was the Revolutionary War patriot, _________ WELCH.
My husband says he was told that the family name was originally WATT, but his mother does not recall this. She does remember that the spelling of the name has changed.
The family legend is that the family was English and owned a shipping company that was quite successful. It was the owner's intent to pass the business on to his son, but the son was completely unwilling to become a shipping magnate. To escape his fate, he ran away from home (on a ship!). The family was embarrassed, for the sons of gentlemen did not do such things in those days. They threatened to disown the young man, and he defied them, even changing the spelling of his name to WIATT to show his total separation from the family. We know that during J.E. WIATT's life span, the spelling was changed again to WYATT. There are some problems with this legend, primarily that at this point we have not been able to confirm the existence of a shipping company owned by a WATT or WIATT family in England. We have, however, learned that one of the descendants of the Rev. Haute WYATT (brother of Sir Francis WIATT, Royal Governor of the Colony of Virginia), had a descendant (William WIATT) who returned to (Liverpool) England to become a shipping company owner and a Sea Captain. Might this be our missing ancestor? Might his descendant have returned to the Colonies where he would assuredly have had friends?
I believe that the family name was originally WIATT, and that the spelling change was from WIATT to WYATT. It is very possible that the family is actually descended from Sir Francis WIATT's brother, the Rev. Haute WYATT. All of the men's names in our WYATT branch are historically and regularly used by the descendants of these men, and many of the aristocratic WIATTs lived in the same areas as our branch of WYATTs.
Sir Francis and Haute were descendants of Sir Thomas WYATT, who was both the son of the world-renowned Poet, Sir Thomas WYATT the Elder, and the aristocrat who led the rebellion against Mary, Queen of Scots. Sir Thomas was imprisoned in the Tower of London for his "treason" and later was executed. When Elizabeth came into power, she rewarded his faithfulness by granting many favors to his descendants, including the Royal Governorship of Virginia.
"The ancestral home of the WYATT family is Allington Castle, located in Kent County, five miles from the city of Maidstone. It stands on the bank of the Medway River and is surrounded by a moat." (1) The Virginia WIATTs seem to be centered in Gloucester County (especially in Petsworth Parish) and Spotsylvania County in Virginia, while groups of WYATTs have moved on to the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and Mississippi, in all of which places large concentrations of WYATTs can be found. Of the few families that have retained the WIATT spelling, most are found in Virginia.
As stated above, it is also possible that our branch of the family is
descended from William WIATT (b. ca. 1720) (son of
Francis, Conquest, Edward, Rev. Haute, Sir George, Sir Thomas the Younger,
Sir Thomas the Poet, Sir Henry), who left the colonies to return to Liverpool,
England to become a merchant and Sea Captain. (2) It would
have been natural for him and his family to have retained contacts in the
colonies, and his adult son may well have conducted business in the colonies
for him, establishing contacts of his own such that he felt comfortable
in moving to America permanently. We will continue to research the
WATT / WIATT / WYATT
line, and hope to have some answers soon. (1997)

Since the above was written, we have learned from the 1880 Federal
Census that in June of 1880, John was living with Thomas C. WYATT,
presumably an older brother. At that time, Thomas had a wife named
Eliza and a one-year-old daughter named Annie. According to census,
Thomas was a merchant in Meridian and John was a clerk in his store.
John was 31 years old at this time and still single (or perhaps widowed).
It would be another 8 years before he would marry. The census shows
that Thomas and John were both born in Mississippi, that their father was
a Virginian (!), and that their mother was a native Mississippian.
J.E. Wiatt and his bride, Maggie A. Bradley, were married in the home of Maggie's parents, with the Rev. E. (C.?) J. Taylor officiating.
At the time of his marriage to Maggie, John was living in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Evidently he moved to Ellisville upon his marriage. A few years, later, the following notice appeared in the Ellisville (Jones County, Mississippi) newspaper, issue of Saturday, June 3, 1893:
"J. E. Wiat & family of Covington Co. are visiting their old home in Ellisville."

5. MELISSA URSULA "LISSA"3 WYATT (THOMAS P.2, (THOMAS C.?)1 WIATT) was born November 1856 in MIssissippi, and died April 01, 1934 in Lake Como, Jasper County, Mississippi; and is buried in Lake Como Baptist Church Cemetery, Jasper County, Mississippi. She married CHARLES "CHARLIE" THIGPEN in 1878 in Mississippi. He was the son of WILLIAM THIGPEN. He was born February 02, 1853 in Old Snow Hill, Wilcox County, Alabama, and died August 24, 1914 in Mississippi; buried in Lake Como Baptist Church Cemetery, Jasper County, Mississippi.
On Melissa's tombstone, her name is spelled "Malissa Ursala Wyatt"; she was known as "Lissa" or "Aunt Lissey."
Lissa and her husband Charles were affiliated with the Baptist Church in Lake Como. Charles's father, William THIGPEN, had migrated to Mississippi from Alabama, and was the founder -- along with his brother Robert Scott THIGPEN -- of the village called Lake Como, located five miles east of the present town of Bay Springs in Jasper County, Mississippi.
Charles, one of six heirs to his father's plantation lands, inherited
land at the intersection of Lake Como Rd. and Heidleberg Rd. in Lake Como.
"He had a general store with post office and a cotton gin. His house
site joined Lake Como Baptist Church which joined Lake Como Academy (several
buildings). He donated land across [the] road from the church for
Lake Como Cemetery. Charles and Malissa are buried there, graves
well marked, grounds well kept; several children also buried there.
Charles was a brother to my grand father, Paul (William's son). My
uncle Percy of Birmingham, the last survivor of Paul's family, owns the
1858 house that William built soon after moving there. Uncle Percy
recalls numerous facts abouy his Uncle Charlie and Aunt Lissey. He
and his mother ate a meal at her house in Aunt Lissey's later years, 1930's."

Nicknamed "Tiny". Even entries in the family Bible refer to her
as "Tiny". Tiny's father's family was a German and Dutch family that
had helped to fund the Revolutionary War. President George Washington
honored the family by giving the first dance at his inaugural ball to one
of the Van ZANDT daughters. The family had moved
from New York and Pennsylvania down into Rutherford, North Carolina, and
then on into Franklin County, Tennessee, where Tiny's father was born.
They moved into the Mississippi Territory a short while later. Tiny's
