in North Carolina, and died March 08, 1889 in Sand Hill, Greene County,
Mississippi; buried in the Lazarus-Walley Cemetery, Perry County, MS.
Notes for SION LEM? BRADLEY:
Sion (probably pronounced "shawn") was a soldier in the War of 1812
according to some notes in Mardy Powell's family
group sheets, but this hardly seems likely since Sion was only born
in 1803 and would have been only 9 years old when the
war began. He died at a good age and is buried in the Lazarus-Walley
Cemetery.
The Lazarus-Walley Cemetery is on property at Sand Hill (near Richton)
MS. This property is owned by Truman Walley, who
lives in Leakesville, Greene Co. MS. Go Hwy 42 West & Cemetery
is on right (fenced in), abt 1/2 mile from road. This is
where Sion, Aquilla Bradley and some family members are buried, per
Myrtle Bradley Walley.
Mardy does not believe that MS residents Tom and Henry Bradley are related to our branch of the family, unless very distantly.

"James M. Bradley . . . was born in North Carolina, but while he was
still a child his parents came to Mississippi [Territory,
settling in the portion which later became Clarke County, MS], where
he was reared to manhood and where he was

independent career. He became the owner of a good farm in
Perry county [Mississippi] and was held in high esteem by all who knew
him, being a man of positive character and
unquestionable probity and having taken an active interest in public

signature is that of Aquilla X. Bradley, who was his brother Sion's

marriage in Clarke County, Alabama.

The following notice appeared in the Ellisville (Jones Co., MS) newspaper:
"Mrs. Elizabeth Bradley age 83, mother of Col. J. M. Bradley, died last
Sunday night and will be buried next to her husband
near Augusta [Perry Co.]."

Mardy Powell Baugh, a BRADLEY descendant, notes in her files that family
knowledge includes the following:
"James M. Bradley, Sr. was Postmaster in Old Augusta, Perry Co MS in
1854. He, along with Edmund Merritt (Gr-Gr-GF)
served on the Grand Jury, who hung the notorious gangster James Copeland."
Other family members serving on the Grand
Jury with him were Edmund Merritt Sr., Quincy A. Bradley, John H. Holder,
and Milton J. Albritton.
Mardy mentions further that James was a member of the Runnelstown, MS, Masonic Lodge.
Mardy's notes state that James was in the Mississippi 27th Infantry,
Co. G., as of September 17, 1862, and was wounded at the Battle of Lookout
Mountain in Tennessee. He would have been in late middle age at this
time -- perhaps this information
should be attached to J.M. Bradley Jr.?

Notes for JAMES MARION BRADLEY, JR., COL.:
James Marion Bradley married Nancy Caroline Bynum in 1854, which is
several years AFTER our Maggie was supposed to
have been born. However, our date of 1847 makes her at least
two years older than her husband, John. It is possible that our
date was copied wrong, and should actually read 1857, which would have
her fitting into James and Nancy's family quite
nicely. It is significant that though James was born in Alabama
and died in Clarke County, Mississippi, his grave is in Ellisville,
which is where our Maggie is supposed to have lived with her father.
James may have gone by the name "Marion", for that is how he is listed
in the 1850 Census, which gives his age as 17 years
and his occupation as that of Farmer.

On Saturday, January 23, 1879, the following notice appeared in the
Ellisville Newspaper:
"Col. J. M. Bradley was on a Masonic lecture tour in Smith Co. last week."
Another mention was made in the issue of Saturday, July 21, 1894:
"Mr. J. M. Bradley presented us with a 46 lb. melon this week."
The issue of Saturday, September 5, 1896, records this:

REBECCA JANE BYRD 1861 in Wayne County, Mississippi.. She was
born November 1842 in Alabama, and died Abt.
1912 in Hattiesburg, Forrest County, Mississippi; was living with daughter
Hilda, near Hattiesburg, at the time; buried Old
Salem Meth. Cem..
George W. Bradley is listed as a physician on census records, but he
was an old-fashioned country herbal doctor. He taught
my grandmother, Mary Virgie (called Mollie) herbal medicine when she
was child.
There was a place called Warsaw Camp near them at Ellisville where there
was an epidemic. Grandma thought it was flu, but it
may have been yellow fever. A lot of Indians were very sick,
many of them died. George Bradley was called on to help
because the doctors couldn't take care of all the sick people.
He treated them with herbal medicines, in spite of the doctors'
objections. They used medicine like tar plasters (turpentine,
castor oil, and tar).

"Doctor Bradley always rode a big red horse in making his calls.
Hilda or Tilda [Laura Mathilda] usually made the rounds with
him. She would hop up in the saddle & ride behind George
to visit his patients.
"Cicero Bradley killed Rube Pnder (Rube was Quint Williams' uncle).
They had been to court & stopped at the Eucutta
Bridge. After & [sic] argument Rube pulled a knife on Cicero.
Cicero picked up a stick to break the knife out of his hand.
When he swung the stick he hit the pistol that Rube was carrying in
his vest pocket. The pistol discharged shooting Rube in the
eye killing him. Rube is buried at Sand Hill. This was
the same year that Quint's brother, Walter, was born 1887.

Mardy Powell Baugh writes:
The Merritt Family owned 2/3rds of Old Augusta, Perry County, Miss.
They were in the Lumber Business and shipped lumber
through the port of New Orleans, LA.
They had a large Plantation in Old Augusta, and entertained dignataries
(sic) coming through. They later built another home. It
is said that the Merritts had lots of money, which they kept in a locked
toom, and some they buried, as they did not feel at ease
using the Banks.
One day their Granddaughters (Sarah Louisea & Eleanor Bradley) were
visiting their grandparents and found the door
cracked, so they went in and found bags of money. It is said
that the buried money was not found after their deaths.
Edmund Merritt, Sr made various business trips and while in Wilcox County,
AL, he was "waylayed' and killed, around
1849-50. Edmund and familyy had lived in "Choba", Wilcox Co.,
Al at one time.
Older Merritt relatives said most of their families were buried in their
Merritt Cemetery in Old Augusta, but it has been grown
over and no graves found in many years. What a shame!
The above information was passed down by Eleanor Bradley to her daughter,
Agnes and she gave it to me (cousin) several

BRADLEY,
RUFUS P., one of the representative famers of Wayne county, and a valued
member of the board of
supervisors of the county, has his postoffice address at Strengthford.
He has passed his entire life thus far in the
State of Mississippi, and has achieved success through his own efforts,
which have been directed along legitimate
lines of endeavor and guided and guarded by a spirit of absolute integrity
and honor. He was born in Perry county,
Miss., March 21, 1849, and is a son of James M. Bradley. His father
was born in North Carolina, but while he was
still a child his parents came to Mississippi, where he was reared to manhood
and where he was identified with
agricultural pursuits during the entire course of his independent career.
He became the owner of a good farm in Perry
county and was held in high esteem by all who knew him, being a man of
positive character and unquestionable probity
and having taken an active interest in public affairs of a local nature.
His death occurred in Perry county in the year
1879. Rufus P. Bradley was reared to the sturdy discipline
of the homestead plantation, in whose work and
management he early began to assist, while his educational advantages
were somewhat limited, owing to the
exigencies of time and place. His schooling was principally secured
in Jasper county, where he resided several years.
He made his efforts count in his youth and in course of time became one
of the prosperous farmers of his native
county, where he was held in the highest popular esteem, being called upon
to serve in various offices of public trust.
He was a member of the board of supervisors of Perry county for two years,
was a county surveyor for an equal
period, served four years as assessor, and made an excellent record in
the office of sheriff, of which he was incumbent
four years. In 1892 Mr. Bradley disposed of his interests in
Perry county and removed to Wayne county, where he
now owns and operates a well improved plantation. He has served as
justice of the peace of this county, and his
services have also been called into requisition as a member of the board
of supervisors, of which he is a member at the
present time. He is in control of important interests as local land
agent for the great lumbering firm of D.A. Blodgett &
Company, of Grand Rapids, Mich., whose holdings in Mississippi timber lands
are very extensive. In politics Mr.
Bradley is unwavering in his allegiance to the Democratic party, and he
is affiliated with Waynesboro lodge Free and
Accepted Masons, having been identified with this fraternity since 1870.
In December, 1879, Mr. Bradley was
married to Miss Sophia F. McDonald, daughter of Alexander McDonald, a prominent
and influential citizen of
Simpson county, Miss., and of the children of this union seven are living,
namely: Margaret E., Mary E., who
is married and resides in Wayne county; Annette, wife of J. D. Dykes, of
Perry County; and Lola, Laura, J. Rufus and
William, who remain at the parental home, as does also the eldest daughter."

At the time of his marriage to Maggie, John was living in Meridian,
Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Evidently he moved to
Ellisville upon his marriage. A few years, later, the following
notice appeared in the Ellisville (Jones County, Mississippi)
newspaper, issue of Saturday, June 3, 1893:
"J. E. Wiat & family of Covington Co. are visiting their old home in Ellisville."
J.E. Wiatt and his bride, Maggie A. Bradley, were married in the home

Notes for LAURA L. "MATILDA" BRADLEY:
Per Don Davenport, one of Laura's descendants:
I first found Laura/Calvin in the 1880 census living next door to Calvin
Bradley. . . . Calvin Davenport appeared to [be] a farm
laborer most of his life. Sometime between 1800 and 1900 Calvin/Laura
moved to Shubuta, Clarke County, MS and this is
where most of the children were born. Some Bradley's (sic) also
lived there so I'm fairly certain that there is probably a
connection to them. Calvin/Laura did not own land until 1904.
This has always bothered me. So much land was being given
away during that period; why did they wait until 1904?
Family legend has it that Laura's family had possibly disowned her when
she married Calvin. It has been stated by more than
one of my older Davenport relatives, that Laura's father did not like
Calvin. . . .
I am pretty certain that Laura married at least 3 times. First
to Calvin, then to a G. Rodgers after Calvin's death, and finally to a
Tom Eastman (or Eastland). The third husband was apparently a
constable in Louisiana. My family is pretty certain that she
[Laura] died on her oldest son's farm (nears Sandersville, Jones Co.)
around 1928. I have not been able to locate any burial
info on Calvin or Laura, but it is believed that they are buried around
there somewhere.

"Cicero Bradley killed Rube Pinder (Rube was Quint Williams' uncle).
They had been to court & stopped at the Eucutta
Bridge. After & [sic] argument Rube pulled a knife on Cicero.
Cicero picked up a stick to break the knife out of his hand.
When he swung the stick he hit the pistol that Rube was carrying in
his vest pocket. The pistol discharged shooting Rube in the
eye killing him. Rube is buried at Sand Hill. This was
the same year that Quint's brother, Walter, was born 1887."
