1. __________1 WIATT was born in England or Virginia. He married __________ CHISWELL?.
we know from the Mississippi Census that this man's son, Thomas P. Wiatt, was born in Virginia about 1810; therefore, Thomas P.'s father or grandfather must have still been living in Virginia at least until 1810. Upon checking the Virginia Censuses for the time period immediately prior to 1810, I have found only one Thomas WYATT, and he is listed as a Head of Household on the 1785 Census of Halifax County, Virginia, with a family consisting of four persons. Going a step further, in a bibliography of family histories having to do with various WYATT lines, I found the following:
The Wyatt Family Records, by Lucile Rebecca (Douglass) Wyatt.
The descendants of E. J. Wyatt, of Pittsylvania County, Va., and
his lineal descendants from John Wyatt, early pioneer of Halifax
Co., who is presumably the descendant of Adam Wyatt through
the Rev. Haute (Hawte) Wyatt, who emigrated from England to Va.
in 1621.
I thought it interesting that our ancestor John E. WYATT has the middle initial of the emigrant ancestor, E. J. WYATT, especially because I have not yet found any other men from the older generations who bore a name beginning with "E." Needless to say, finding a copy of this book is high on my list of priorities!
Recently, while perusing the IGI for Virginia, I found a number of couples who could conceivably be the parents of our Thomas P. Wiatt. See below for the names and marriage information.
The maternal name of CHISWELL is strictly a guess. Because a number of descendants are given the name "CHISWELL" as their middle name, it is conceivable that this was a surname from a female ancestor. Significantly, in 1870 there was a man by the name of CHISWELL WYATT living in Campbell County, Virginia, our WIATT's home state. However, none of the potential parental couples mentioned above included a wife with the surname CHISWELL, so . . .
The name may, however, simply have been given in admiration of Col. John CHISWELL, an early and influential settler of Virginia. The name CHISWELL is well known and highly respected in Virginia. The family is listed among the first settlers of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, along with such illustrious Virginia families as the MERRIWETHERs and the LEWISes. Col. John CHISWELL of England discovered the lead mining potential in Wythe County, Virginia in the 1750's and arranged for Welsh and English funding of a mining venture. The family eventually spread into Tennessee, West Virginia, and other Southern states, but has remained seated primarily in Maryland and Virginia. It will be interesting to discover what our connection to the CHISWELL family actually is!

Below are listed some possible parents of
our Thomas P. WYATT, taken from the IGI for Virginia, fiche #0-1676, US,
VA. If you, dear Web Surfer, have knowledge of any of these couples
and/or their children, I would be most grateful for any information you
can offer about them. Something may point us toward our Thomas!
Thomas WYATT, married Polly ROANE 18 Jan 1810 in King & Queen Co., VA (Our Thomas was born abt 1810. Since this couple was married in mid-January, they could easily have had a child by the end of the year.)
Hubbard WYATT married Betsey S. AVERY 31 Dec 1805 in Greenville, Augusta Co.
Thomas WYATT married Nancy CAULFIELD 06 Feb 1804 in Chesterfield Co., VA
Elial WYATT married Martha COMPTON
30 Aug 1803 in Halifax Co., VA
(Elial, b. 1778 in Halifax Co., was the
son of John WYATT and Hannah VINCENT.)
John WYATT married Elizabeth WILLIAMS
19 Dec 1803 in Lunenburg Co., VA
They had a son John born abt. 1810.
John WYATT married Susannah LAW 12 Aug 1802 in Franklin Co., VA (I would think it odd if this couple turned out to be the parents of our Thomas. His mother would be named Susannah, and his mother-in-law would also be named Susannah, yet our Thomas did not name any of his daughters Susannah.)
John W. WYATT was born 1800 in James City, Bruton Parish, VA. (brother?)
George WIAT (or WRAE) married Elizabeth Jonnes
01 Dec 1799 in
Augusta Co., VA
James WYATT married Fanny CURTIS 10 Oct 1798 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co., VA
Thomas WYATT married Mary REECE 07 Dec 1797 in Franklin Co., VA (very interesting)
John WYATT married Ann TURNER 15 Apr 1795 in Frederick Co., VA
Henry WYATT married Elizabeth REDD about
1794 in Spotsylvania Co., VA
They had a son named John who was born 1806
in Spotsylvania Co
Vincent WYATT was having children with Elizabeth SIMPSON in 1794.
Elijah WYATT married Frances CANTERBURY 27 Dec. 1794 in Franklin Co., VA. (Elijah is a name used by the WYATTs of Newton Co., MS. Remember our John "E." ?! I find it very intriguing that it was a Zona CANTERBURY who wrote a book about the WYATT family, and the description of the book specifically mentions descendants in Mississippi. I have ordered a film of the book (28 Nov 2000) from the Family History Center in Utah, and anxiously await the results!)
Thomas WYATT married Sarah MILLER 18 May 1793 in Campbell Co., VA (This is a promising couple: he is named Thomas like "our" Thomas. She is named Sarah, and our Thomas named his daughter Sarah. Remember, too, that the only CHISWELL Wyatt of record was born in Campbell Co.)
Conquest WYATT married Fanny HUNT 22 Apr 1793 in Halifax Co., VA (This is an interesting couple, since Conquest is a family name of the line that we believe we may be descended from.)
Elijah WYATT married Mary Grigsby FOSTER 15 Sept 1793 in Halifax. They had a daughter named Esther in 1798, Prince William Co. I did not have time to check to see if they had any other children. (Elijah is a named used by the WYATT family of Newton Co., MS.)
W. WYATT married Susan JONES 15 June 1790, Amelia Co., VA
George WYATT married Amanda HOLCOMB 15 June 1790 in Amherst Co.
James WYATT married Milley COMPTON 25 Aug 1790 in Halifax Co.
A Thomas Turner WYATT married Mrs. Lucy WYATT about 1779. Though this couple is too early to be the parents of our Thomas, I find the wife's name of Lucy very interesting since our Thomas named his youngest daughter Lucy. As it happens, Thomas Turner and Lucy Wyatt had a son named Emmanuel (remember our John "E."?) born in 1780, who would have been just the right age to have our Thomas as his son in 1810. They also had a son named John born in 1793. Interesting . . . .

2. THOMAS P.2 WYATT, M.D. (__________1 WIATT)1 was born 1810 in Virginia 2,3, and died in Mississippi?. He is said to be buried in in the town of Lake Como, Mississippi. He married REBECCA SNELL4, 1844 in Jasper County, Mississippi5. She was born 1828 in Mississippi6,7, and died in Mississippi?. She was the daughter of SUSANNAH (SNELL).
Notes for THOMAS P. WYATT, M.D.:
The book, The Thigpen Tribe, which
recounts the history of the THIGPEN family, states that Thomas WYATT was
an officer in the Confederate medical corps during the Civil War.
(The 1850 Census does not list his occupation, and we have not seen the
1860 or 1870 Census yet, so this is not confirmed.) Thomas is not
listed with the rest of his family in the 1860 Census of Turnerville, Lauderdale
County, Mississippi, which may indicate that he had already left for the
battlefields. T.C., the oldest son, would leave for battle within
a year of the census and would be blinded in both eyes at the Battle of
Chickamauga.

Notes for REBECCA SNELL:
Rebecca was probably part of the SNELL family
that immigrated into Mississippi from the German settlement in Orangeburgh,
South Carolina. Some of them appear to have come to Jasper County,
Mississippi, while others went to Pike County. A number of the extended
family moved on into Sabine County, Louisiana where we find them in the
1870’s.
A SNELL family next door to the WYATTs in 1860 is listed below. The head of the family, J. M. Snell (James Morris Snell), is of the right age to have been Rebecca's brother:

(Susan may have been Mary's mother, but if so, she must have remarried, for Mary's maiden name was DOWNES. The other possibility is that Susan was James's mother and therefore probably the mother of our Rebecca, but this is difficult to reconcile with the data given in the various censuses. The 1840 census shows a Susan SNELL as head of household for a family that included 2 male children and 3 female children. Rebecca and James fit the age groups for these children. This Susan was supposedly 50-60 years old when the 1840 Census was taken. This seems a little old to be the mother of a 10-15 year old boy and a 5-10 yr-old daughter, but it is not impossible; however, it seems likely that the census taker may have intended to put his mark in the 40-50 slot. If this IS the same Susan living with James in 1860, the census taker must indeed have made a mistake back in 1840. Also, Susan would have to have remarried to have taken the name RABORN. However, in 1870, a Susan SNELL, b. 1797 in SC, aged 73 yrs, is living near the rest of the SNELL family in Sabine County, Louisiana; this lady appears to be the same Susan SNELL of the 1840 census. Had she indeed remarried, it would be strange for her to drop her new married name of RABORN and go back to her old married name of SNELL. We may well be speaking of two different Susans, possibly even three. So for the moment, the mystery remains -- who is SUSAN RABORN?)

4. JOHN E.3 WYATT (THOMAS P.2, __________1 WIATT)13,14 was born December 12, 1849 in Mississippi15,16,17, and died August 06, 1923 in Mississippi. He married MARGARET A. "MAGGIE" BRADLEY18,19 1883 in Ellisville, Jone County, Mississippi. She was born February 28, 1857 in Perry County, Mississippi19, and died December 02, 1944 in Mississippi20. She was the daughter of JAMES MARION BRADLEY, Jr., and NANCY CAROLINE BYNUM.
Notes for JOHN E. WYATT:
My husband says he was told that the family
name was originally WATT, but his mother does not recall this. She
does remember that the spelling of the name has changed, probably from
WIATT to WYATT.
The family legend is that the family was English and owned a shipping company that was quite successful. It was the owner's intent to pass the business on to his son, but the son was completely unwilling to become a shipping magnate. To escape his fate, he ran away from home (on a ship!). The family was embarrassed, for the sons of gentlemen did not do such things in those days. They threatened to disown the young man, and he defied them, even changing the spelling of his name to show his total separation from the family.
During John E. Wiatt's life span (1849-1929), the spelling was changed from WIATT to WYATT, and this may be the spelling change that remains in the family "memory." There are some problems with the family legend, primarily that at this point we have not been able to confirm the existence of a shipping company owned by a WATT or WIATT family in England. We have, however, learned that one of the descendants of Rev. Haute Wiatt, brother of Sir Francis Wiatt (twice Royal Governor of the Colony of Virginia), had a descendant (William Wiatt) who returned to (Liverpool) England to become a shipping company owner and a Sea Captain. Might this be the father of our missing relative? Might his son have returned to the Colonies where he would assuredly have had friends?
Sir Francis and Haute were descendants of Sir Thomas Wiatt the younger, who was the son of the world-renowned Poet, Sir Thomas Wyatt the elder. Thomas the younger was the aristocrat who led the rebellion against Mary, Queen of Scots in an effort to prevent her marriage to the King of Spain. The great fear was that the Spanish king would thereby obtain lasting control over England and that Englishmen would lose their right of self-determination. Sir Thomas was imprisoned in the Tower of London for his "treason" and later was executed by decapitation. When Elizabeth came into power, she rewarded his faithfulness by granting many favors to his descendants, including the Royal Governorship of Virginia.
"The ancestral home of the Wyatt family is
Allington Castle, located in Kent County, five miles from the city of Maidstone.
It stands on the bank of the Medway River and is surrounded by a moat."
(1) The Virginia Wiatts seem to be centered in Gloucester County
and Spotsylvania County in Virginia, while groups of Wyatts have moved
on to the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi,
in all of which places large concentrations of Wyatts can be found.
Very few of the families have retained the WIATT spelling, most of them
being found in Virginia.

Since the above was written, we have learned
from the 1880 Federal Census that in June of 1880, John was living with
Thomas C. Wyatt, his older brother. At that time, Thomas had a wife
named Eliza and a one-year-old daughter named Annie. According to
census, Thomas was a merchant in Meridian and John was a clerk in his store.
John was 31 years old at this time and still single. It would
be another 8 years before he would marry. The census shows that Thomas
and John were both born in Mississippi, that their father was a Virginian
(as expected!), and that their mother was a native Mississippian.
We have also learned that Thomas C. "Chiz" Wyatt, John's brother, was in the Civil War as a soldier at the tender age of 16. He was blinded in both eyes during battle, but went home to be the owner of a "large furniture store" in Meridian, Lauderdale County, Mississippi. This is apparently the store that John was working in at the time of the 1880 Census.

She married CHARLES "CHARLIE" THIGPEN25 1878 in Mississippi25. He was born February 02, 1853 in Old Snow Hill, Wilcox County, Alabama25,26, and died August 24, 1914 in Mississippi; buried in Lake Como Baptist Church Cemetery, Jasper County, Mississippi; however, his nephew, who was not born until 1917, remembers him well! Perhaps the tombstone actually reads 1924?27.
Notes for MELISSA URSULA "LISSA" WYATT:
On Melissa's tombstone, her name is spelled
"Malissa Ursala Wyatt"; she was known as "Lissa" or "Aunt Lissey."
Lissa and her husband Charles were affiliated with the Baptist Church in Lake Como. Charles's father, William Thigpen, had migrated to Mississippi from Alabama, and was the founder -- along with his brother Robert Scott Thigpen -- of the village called Lake Como, located five miles east of the present town of Bay Springs in Jasper County, Mississippi.
Charles, one of six heirs to his father's plantation lands, inherited land at the intersection of Lake Como Rd. and Heidleberg Rd. in Lake Como. "He had a general store with post office and a cotton gin. His house site joined Lake Como Baptist Church which joined Lake Como Academy (several buildings). He donated land across [the] road from the church for Lake Como Cemetery. Charles and Malissa are buried there, graves well marked, grounds well kept; several children also buried there. Charles was a brother to my grand father, Paul (William's son). My uncle Percy of Birmingham, the last survivor of Paul's family, owns the 1858 house that William built soon after moving there. Uncle Percy recalls numerous facts abouy his Uncle Charlie and Aunt Lissey. He and his mother ate a meal at her house in Aunt Lissey's later years, 1930's." Re: Thigpen family
Sorry to tell you I know nothing about Aunt Lissey [Melissa Ursula Wyatt 1856-1934] except that she was a very good cook. The date of Uncle Charlies death in your record [24 Aug 1914] is incorrect. I was born in 1917 and remember him very well. He gave me my first dog, bringing him to me riding his big mule. The dog was a small terrier that rode in his (Charlies) coat pocket.
My question to you please. Do you have any conclusive evidence that Charles or his father William lived in or near old Snow Hill, AL? I am the oldest living descendant of (83y) William7 (Charles) father and only know that oral tradition is that the family went to Lake Como MS from Snow Hill.
Charlotte Turner [another THIGPEN descendant from this branch of the family] and I have searched hard on several occasions and find nothing to prove that the family was ever in Snow Hill. If you have such proof please let me know. I'll be glad to share anything I have with you. And I hope to learn to communicate by computer.
The only older descendant of William7 [THIGPEN], Zenobia Houston, died Nov 7 - 00 at age 98 in a nursing home. She only remembered "everybody" always said the family came from Snow Hill, AL.

Percy Lee Thigpen
