Notes for August Heinrich Ferdinand Busse:

August is the immigrant Busse ancestor of most of this clan to America. I have not been able to locate the emigration data for August and his two older sons, who seem to have come over about a year earlier than Charlotte and the younger children.

I wondered if I might now have a source leading to the identification of the for the seemingly apocryphal Uncle "Carl" Busse in Pottawattamie county Iowa. Certainly there is a Carl Busse in the neighborhood; however, he was born in 1844, and I don't have any listings of this Carl amongst the children of August and Charlotte. There is no record of this Carl in the Genthin church record as a son of August and Charlotte; at any rate his birth would have been before their January 1847 marriage.

While going again (in late 2005) through the Busse obits sent to me by Mrs. Norma Anderson, I thought to take a more detailed look back through the Genthin records. I looked again at the marriage record of August Busse and Charlotte Buch, and it says that Charlotte had been married prior to that date! When I looked again at the Bittkau records I already had, I even found the 1840 record of her marriage to Christian Schroder. So was Carl a son of Charlotte and this Christian Schroder? There is no record of his birth in the Bittkau records for 1844.

Notes for Rev. Fredrick Busse:

"'Rev. F. Busse Called Above'

Paul W. Busse, assistant cashier at the A. G. Danforth & Co. bank of Washington, received a telegram last Friday announcing the sudden death of his father, Rev. F. Busse, at his home in Chicago. Mr. Busse had been troubled for some time with heart affection, but was apparently in his usual health. He got up in the morning feeling all right and went out to sweep a little snow off the sidewalk. He came in the house about 9 o'clock and sat down in a chair. He complained of feeling a little cold. His wife was reading to him when she turned around and saw him drop back in his chair. When she went to his aid he had passed away, without a struggle or a single pain. It was the death he had hoped to have. Mr. Busse was a liberal contributor to church papers as his services were often asked for. A few days before his death he prepared a paper and told his wife that it was the last he would write. He evidently had a premonition that his end was near.      Frederick Busse was born in Saxony, Germany, August 28, 1849. When about 17 years of age he came with his father and an older brother to this country, the family coming on a little later. They settled on a farm near Streator, Ill., Mr. Busse had been quite well educated in Germany, but when he decided to take up the career of the ministry in this country he was tutored under the older ministers of the conference. He early in life showed his aptitude for this work and when a young man of 23 when he entered the ministry he was assigned to responsible charges. He held pastorates at various points in the sate, at Elgin, Geneseo, Red Oak and at various churches in Chicago. When but 36 years of age he was selected as the presiding elder for the Southern Illinois District Evangelical Church Association. That was in 1888 and he was located at Washington, Ill. He held the presiding eldership for six years. He then went to Chicago where he took a pastorate and was later selected as presiding elder of the Chicago District. He made his home since then in Chicago and gave up the eldership there for lighter work as a pastor in various churches. He held a charge until about seven years ago when he retired, but still kept up the work by assisting presiding elders and ministers in various churches. During this time an intimate friend who was a pastor of a Congregational church in Chicago died. The members of the church requested Mr. Busse to take charge until they could get another pastor. He did so and for eight months ministered to them and donated his salary to the widow of the deceased pastor.      Mr. Busse was certainly one of God's noblemen. His whole life was filled with kindly deeds and he worked only for noble ends and purposes. Few men have ever been paid the tribute that was paid to him. Upon his own request that his funeral should not be held on Sunday to interfere with the work of the church, his body lay in state at is home in Chicago over Sunday. Hundreds of friends from Chicago and from a distance of 25 miles came to call and pay tribute to his memory. Among them were people in all walks of life, an ex-member of congress, bankers, janitors, street car men, laborers, etc. One and all told of what his splendid influence had been over them, how they had been made better under is ministry and under his association.      Mr. Busse was always trying to serve others. His whole life was devoted to forgetting self and doing for others. He had a wonderful field for work in the big city and he used it to splendid advantage. Only on Thanksgiving day he wrote his son that he was thankful for the day and his heart felt good as he had been able to help out a needy fellow man.      Two years after Mr. Busse entered the ministry, at the age of 25, he was married to Caroline Eberhart, a farmer's daughter near Streator. They went to housekeeping at Elgin where he had been selected to ministry to an important charge. Through all the years of his life she has been his able helper and a councellor and is left to mourn the death of a beloved husband. To the union six children were born. Jesse died at Geneseo, aged 3 years. Those surviving are Mrs. Emaline Himmel of Pekin, Paul W. of Washington, Edwin G. and Clayton F. of Chicago and Mrs. Nelda Roth of Indianapolis.     The funeral was held from the Ashland avenue Evangelical church in Chicago, the church of which he was formerly pastor and which up until the time of his death he assisted greatly in ministering to in every way. There was a very large audience present. Some twenty different ministers were present. Among those taking part were Presiding Elder Yoekel, Rev. L. C. Schmidt, Thoren, Tuessle, Stamm and Heisele. They paid a splendid loving tribute to the character and life of Rev. Busse. Seldom has a more eloquent testimony of a man's true ever been given than was on this occasion. One of the speakers likened him to John the Baptist, the man sent from heaven to minister to mankind. As the procession marched from the church school children of the neighborhood formed in lines. They had come to add their tribute to Father Busse, as he was so lovingly known in the whole neighborhood.      The body was taken to the depot from the church and escorted by the family to Washington. Here it was taken to the home of Mr. Busse's son. On Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock short services were held. Rev. Trower read the scriptures and spoke briefly paying his tribute. He spoke of his noble life and brought out one feature about his patriotism for his beloved country, the United States. Rev. Stephan, pastor of the Groveland church, an old friend or Rev. Busse also gave his tribute.      The burial was in Glendale cemetery in Washington, the little city to which Mr. Busse always liked to come and visit."

Notes for Franz Theodor Busse:

"'Busse'

- F. Woth"

 - from a collection of copies of Busse family records that I received from Mrs. Norma Anderson (Pekin, Illinois) in February 2003. My own translation follows - (                He was born on 26th Nov. 1851 in Genthin, Province of Saxony, Kingdom of Prussia. In the year 1868 he came to America and lived first in Streator, Ill. In 1874 he moved to Iowa. In the year 1875 he joined in the bonds of holy marriage with Augusta Rudig. This marriage was blessed with 7 children, 5 sons and 2 daughters. One son, Benjamin, 19 years old, went before his father into eternity. Beginning in August of last year                dropsy. For 10 weeks he was bed-ridden. On Saturday, the 10th of January he was saved from his difficult suffering and went to be with his master. He put his age to 62 years, 1 month and 15 days. He leaves behind his deeply sorrowful wife, 6 children, 9 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 1 sister and many friends. Brother Busse was converted to God in Streator, Ill., in the year 1868. His principle was "I and my house will serve the Lord." He was gifted and proved to be versatile in many ways. For over twenty years he was a justice of the peace. He was a teacher and superintendent of the Sunday school. He was always ready to help with council or advice. In him the community has lost a very good              and the city of A(v)oca a good citizen. The memory of the just remains in abundance. He had born many days that were burdensome and difficult (heat?). "Blessed are the dead, those who died in the Lord, beginning now. Yes, the Spirit said, those who rest from their labor                                     ."    - F. Woth)

Notes for Augusta Rudig:

The southern portion of the present town of Cornell, Illinois was once called Amity, and it was about here that Martin Rudig brought his growing family in the early 1850's to make their living from working the land. When the Busse's immigrated in 1868, they had settled about 10-12 miles north in Otter Creek township in La Salle county. Perhaps together, but sometime around the mid-1870's, these families pulled up stakes and moved to western Iowa. The Busse's settling in James Twp., Pottawattamie county while the Rudig's took up residence a few miles further east, in Noble Twp. in adjacent Cass county.

Notes for Charlotte Busse:

"'Obituary'

Charlotte Wilhelmina Busse, daughter of August and Charlotte Busse, was born September 1, 1862 in Gothin, Germany. At the age of six she came with her parents to this country and settled near Streator, Illinois. In 1876 they came to Iowa, settling near Minden.      Charlotte Busse was united in marriage to Frederic Bleich on Jan. 1, 1877, which union was blessed with five children, one son, Adolph, four daughters, Helena, Hulda, Charlotte and Emeline. After a period of twenty seven years of farm life, she moved to Avoca in 1903.      In 1871, Charlotte Busse was happily converted under the ministry of Rev. Mr. Hoffman. She united with the Evangelical Association of which church she was a faithful member. Upon removal to Avoca she united with the Second Congregational church. Her sweet Christian character bore abundant testimony that her "life was hid with Christ in God."     About two years ago she was stricken with gall trouble and since then there has been a steady decline in health until relieved by her Lord early Sunday morning, April 5, 1936, at the age of seventy three years and some months, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Emeline Rohlfs in Avoca where she had resided for a number of years. She was preceded in death by her husband and two children, Adolph and Helena; and survived by three daughters, Mrs. Hulda Stuhr who is in a hospital in a serious condition, Mrs. Charlotte Noller of Hancock and Mrs Emeline Rohlfs of Avoca, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, other relatives and many friends, all of whom will mourn her departure. She was the last of her family.      Brief funeral services were held Tuesday, April 7th at 1:30 p. m. at the home by Rev. T. A. Thompson, and further services at 2:30 p. m. at the Silver Creek Evangelical church, assisted by Rev. Mr. Ellerbeck. Interment was made in the Silver Creek cemetery."

Notes for Frederick Bleich:

After Frederick's father died in 1878, his mother Anna then married to his father-in-law, August Busse, who had also been widowed a few years earlier.

"'Frederick Bleich.'

Mr. Frederick Bleich was stricken with appoplexy Saturday morning, June 7, at about 11 o'clock at his home in Avoca, Iowa. He never regained conciousness, and passed peacefully away the next morning at 2:15, aged seventy-one years, seven months and two days. Funeral services were held at the Second Congregational church Tuesday afternoon, Rev. W. F. Essig officiating.      Mr. Bleich, son of Gottleib and Anna Bleich, was born in Germany in the Provice of Possen November 6, 1852. He received Holy Baptism and was confirmed in the Evangelical faith, also received a good education.      In 1869 at the age of 17 years he came with his parents to American and lived for at time in Chatsworth, Illinois. Then he, with his parents and about a dozen Illinois friends, came to Iowa, traveling in wagons and settled down in Mills county on a farm. In 1874 he bought land near Oakland, Iowa, and later made his home on a farm near Silver Creek. On January 1, 1877 he united in marriage with Miss Charlotte Busse. The Lord blessed them with five children: Adolph, Helena, Hulda, Charlotte and Emiline. Adolph and Helena preceded him in death. After a period of 27 years of farm life, he moved to Avoca in 1903. Here he joined our Second Congregational church and has been a very active, serviceable and lovable member. As a citizen of our community he was much respected and loved because of his friendly and faithful Christian character. He will be much missed by the church and a host of friends and neighbors. His grief-stricken wife has lost a loving husband, his children a good father, the relatives and friends a good true friend.      He leaves to mourn, his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Hulda Stuhr, of Silver Creek; Mrs. Charlotte Noller, of Hancock, Iowa; and Mrs. Emiline Rohlfs, of Avoca, nine grandchildren, five sisters, Mrs. Minnie Alfs, of Cherokee, Ia., Mrs. Henrietta Guderjon of Oakland, Ia., Mrs. Augusta Helman, of Oakland, Ia., Mrs. Emma Haliday of Laurel, Nebr., Mrs. Julia Strobel of Hancock, Ia., and many relatives and friends. Notes for Herbert Rudolph Busse:

"'Herbert Rudolph Busse'

Herbert Rudolph Busse, son of the late August and Margaret Busse, was born April 23, 1888 near Minden, Iowa, now known as the Silver Creek district.      He received Christian baptism in the Silver Creek Evangelical church in his infancy. In 1891 he moved to Avoca with his parents and was affiliated with our Second Congregational church. He attended the public school and high school in Avoca. During his last high school year here in 1906 his father wanted him to attend the Congregational College at Redfield, South Dakota, of which he was a trustee. He went to Redfield College and graduated there in 1911. He decided to study law and attended the University of South Dakota and later took a graduate course at the University of Chicago. In 1914 he received his law degree.      June 16, 1914 he was united in marriage to Miss Grace Dreisbach of Redfield, South Dakota, who was a minister's daughter, and who had been his classmate all through college. With his young wife he then moved to Friend, Nebraska, where he became a law partner with Mr. C. F. Barth, and where he practiced for three years.      It was at Friend, Nebr., that he and his good wife joined the First Congregational of which they are still members.      Thinking, that as a young lawyer, he would have a better future, if he would go further west, he moved to Chappell, Nebraska. After one year's practice there, he was elected judge of Deuel county, Nebraska. He was re-elected to that office twice as he was now serving his third term as judge.      Mr. Busse was also an honored member of the Masonic Odrer of the Chappell lodge, and enjoyed a large friendship in the community.      About three weeks ago he suffered from a severe attack of pleurisy. Later typhoid fever and pneumonia developed. His condition becoming alarming, he was placed on a Union Pacific train last Friday to be taken to Omaha for treatment. On arrival of the train in Grand Island his condition was so critical as to necessitate his being removed from the train to the St. Francis hospital there. Only slight hopes were entertained for his recovery at that time, his temperature being 106 when he was brought to the hospital. On Monday morning at 1:30, April 27, 1925, he passed quietly into the great beyond.      His remains were brought to Avoca, accompanied by his widow, and daughter, Barbara, and his step-mother, Mrs. Fannie Busse, and his brother, Elmer Busse, and taken to the home of of Mrs. Fannie Busse.      Mr. Busse had reached the age of 37 years and four days. He leaves to mourn, his beloved wife, Mrs. Grace B. Busse and daughter Barbara Grace, nine years old, also his good step-mother, Mrs. Fannie Busse, who practically raised him, two sisters, Mrs. Lena Bunge, of Avoca; and Mrs Erna Updegraff, of Washington, D. C., and two brothers, Elmer Busse of Atlantic, Iowa, and Paul Busse of Chicago, Ill., also other realtives and many friends.      The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. F. Essig in the Second Congregational church Thursday, April, 30 at 2 p. m. The remains were laid to rest in the family lot at the Silver Creek cemetery near Minden, Iowa, where the Masonic Lodge gave him a beautiful burial.      We extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family and relatives in their great bereavement."

Notes for Paul Philus Busse:

The following article appeared in "Printer's Ink" (an advertising trade journal), 9 February 1951, v. 234, p. 72. "'Retired Sears copy chief reduced copywriters' training from 24 to 3 months'

In 1938 when Paul P. Busse took over as catalog copy chief at Sears, Roebuck & Co., it took two years to train Sears copy writers to turn out usable sales copy. Now it takes three months.          That's one accomplishment of Mr. Busse, who spent 33 years in Sears' mail-order advertising department. There are others - chiefly accomplished when he was department head. He retired last year on reaching Sears' retirement age of 60.          Mr. Busse was born near Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1890. He studied mechanical engineering for a time at the University of Iowa before "finding out I'm not an engineer." He started his own newspaper in Wyoming in 1911. He came to Chicago in 1913 and joined Sears in 1917. Before he became copy chief, he had written copy for practically all Sears lines.          But how did he increase the selling efficiency of the catalogs? Mr. Busse says he: () always stressed the point: Merchandise will not move itself  () personally trained copy writers how to be better salesmen  () concentrated on making the catalogs as complete as possible to eliminate the big problem of customers writing in for additional information about items  () got up formulas, manuals and textbooks to supplement students' advertising knowledge gained in college and to teach selling fundamentals to other new copy writers. The books were always designed to show how to do it in writing sales copy. In doing this Mr. Busse often called on the work of other sales people if he considered their techniques better than the Sears selling formulas.          Not only did quality increase as a result of the concentrated training program. Quantity increased as well - so much so that volume of work turned out was more than doubled with no increase in personnel.          Mr. Busse has positive convictions on advertising. One of them is that admen move around too much. He points to his 33 years at Sears to show that "Admen can grow, prosper and be happy with one company or one type of operation." He says you don't have to move around to succeed.          As to copy in general, he says "the more you tell, the more you sell - whether it be in national media, mail order, retail or word of mouth copy." Too many retailers show rather than tell in their advertising, he declares.          Mr. Busse thinks 60 is much too young an age to quit the field. He's considering joining the faculty of Notre Dame to teach advanced advertising. Now he's back with the company he saw expand in mail-order business many times the $75,000,000 figure in 1917. He's cleaning up a special assignment at Sears and is ready for others as they arise. - M. F. H."

The following brief notice of her marriage appeared in the Times -

'"Marie Pope Married"

A reporter is informed that Miss Marie Pope, daughter of R. M. Pope, of this village, and Alvin C. Busse, of St. Paul, were married last Wednesday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Cooper in St. Paul. We are unable to secure further particulars of the wedding but understand they will make their home in New York city, where Mr. Busse has a position as instructor in a college.     The bride is a favorite among her many friends in Mora, where she has resided since childhood and all will join with the Times in extending best wishes for a long, happy and prosperous wedded career.'

The wedding took place at the home of her maternal aunt, Margaret (Howard) and her husband Daniel H. Cooper. I believe that Marie and Alvin may have met while she was attending Macalester College in St. Paul.
