History books only give an “idea” of what happened?
You insult all written records.
Why do you feel history records are any different and less accurate than any other record?
Where would science or any progress be without written records? It is called documentation.
Written history hasn't been the problem, it has been people trying to rewrite history, which happens all too often these days, trying to get it to fit into their personal version.
I will take written histories, backed up with many records any day over verbal versions-- ever play gossip when you were a kid?
I understand some cultures kept their history verbally for many years, that is not the verbal history I am talking about.
It is not just genealogy that “individual verbal history” gets it wrong. Great-grandma said, she was at the inaguration of such and such, and then you find out she was born five years later,
etc. etc. I often wonder how much television has contributed to “memories”
