Rick: Thanks so much for all this helpful information. It convinces me that my ggrandfather probably fought close to Arkansas. The two ranks for Thomas Dunnell that you mentioned are one and the same man. Even in the census his name was often misspelled.

Do any military records from the Civil War show how old the guy was, where he was from or how many children he had? I don't know how to pinpoint all the John Harris names that I find. If it said that he was born in 1835 in Mo., lived in Arkansas and had a wife and two kids, then I could believe it may be him. Thanks, Ann
