In doing a web search and reading several entries regading Civil War veterans...it appears to me that the term "rank out" is used to record the rank held by the individual at the time mustered out, discharged or released from military duty. Without having any "papers" in front of me and the papers not indicating that the member was disceased or killed in action or from disease...then I take this term as used for living members being released from the military. The term is used in conjunction with their rank on the date of enlistment with "Rank in - Private"....then discharged from military duty with "Rank out - Sergeant".
Hope this helps
