Tired of Paying for DNA Testing?

By Robert Stafford December 12, 2005 at 02:04:59

If you are tired of overpaying for DNA testing, the Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) offers a free alternative. You will also be helping them develop new ways to use DNA for genealogy.

They don't return results directly. However, it is easy to do a surname search to find the results. The participant can be identified by the pre-1900 ancestors in his pedigree.

They also only show non-matches. However, it is easy to extract the results by methodically trying different values. It takes usually less than 5 minutes, if done correctly.

The biggest problem is that it takes a relatively long time to post the results. SMGF has solved this problem by offering a coupon for a $95 test at Relative Genetics, much cheaper than anywhere else. Thus, the person can get enough results for comparison in a few weeks and then end up with 13 more markers later. The coupon can also be used by someone else.

Previous participants can fill out the form and get a coupon. New participants will receive one automatically.
