I have a Dell Dimension E520 with Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300 (1.86GHz, 1066FSB) with 2MB cache and 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533 MHz, 250GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200RPM) so I know space and processor speed is not an issue.
I have been having the problem of the program closing on me four times with the message, “Windows needs to close. Windows will try to find a solution to this problem.” One of the times it closed down was while it was performing the backup I had requested. This could be happening only on the VISTA OS, but I don’t know.
There are several new features I like, but so far I have found it to be very difficult to use and not intuitive at all. There are so many things displayed on one page, it takes awhile for the information added or changed to be updated.
Earlier this morning, I was determined to work on my family again so I could print a genealogy report with some of the new information I have. I discovered the data I entered yesterday for 21 people with a multitude of notes had been lost during the shutdown yesterday!! I reentered the data in between TWO MORE SHUT DOWNS and was able to run two reports. Neither report helps me at all! One was a relationship report—I was getting desperate trying to figure out which report to select. I was trying to get a descendant report for the direct ancestor. The other report I generated, again trying to get the descendant report, listed 323 descendants, 27 pages, of my descendant in ALPHABETICAL ORDER! From what I read on the message boards, the report I want is not offered in FTM 2008! Is it true that genealogy reports and outline reports as we knew them in previous versions of FTM no longer exist in FTM 2008? That is a deal breaker for me! The problems with FTM 2008 negate any of the features that I do like, e.g., the list of individuals and notes are shown on the same page as the family information and family tree so the accessibility is much easier, but it is very slow to update and you have to wait for your entry to show up on the page before you can enter anything else, which is very frustrating.
This morning I called the help line for technical support. A live person answered almost immediately, but she was not part of the technical support. She told me to try calling back in about 2 hours, because there was at least an hour’s wait to talk with a support person. I am going to wait until tomorrow and call when they first open at 9:00 EDT. It is almost a mute point now, because I have decided to stay with my version 16, but I would like to know if the shut downs are VISTA related or is this also happening with the XP users.
