How do I find immigrations records for the 1800's
I'm trying to find out if my ggggrandfather James B. McCauley/McAuley came to the US from Ireland.
I have found him on several censuses with differing information. The children are correct, so we know it's him... one says he was born in Pennsylvania-1870, one says Virginia (Where he lived, married, and died), one says Ireland-1850, and one says Northern Ireland.
James B McCauley, a stonecutter in Richmond (have records showing him living in Deep Bottom, Henrico Co, VA), married Elizabeth Johnson on 20 Mar 1848 in Henrico County VA, both were over the age of 21 according to the cert, so we know he would have come to the US before that... the one census says Penn - so we are guessing the he came through a port in Penn. The family has always said he came from Ireland and that he was a "7th son"
From what I have heard, I would say he probably came over with family, brothers at least, and we only have one name for sure and two possibles for brothers... Joseph (for sure, with census records saying Northern Ireland) and John and William as possible brothers...
How does one go about finding those immigration records? I have looked at Family Search, Ship's List and Ancestry to no avail...
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!!
