I wonder if anyone might be able to help flesh out and solidify the thus far inadequately examined ancestry of the Umfreville families of Farnham Royal, Bucks and Ewell, Surrey.
In my article, "The English Origin of John Umfreville of New Haven, Connecticut" (_The American Genealogist_ 72 (January 1997):15-19), I cited the rather skeletal lineage of the Ewell, Surrey and Farnham Royal, Bucks Umfreville families as delineated by Surtees in his _The History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham_ (1816-40), vol. 2, pp. 325, 395. Surtees claimed as his authority for this to be Sir William Segar, Garter King of Arms, c.1710, and was found in "Philpot's Corrections in the College of Arms".
Gary Boyd Roberts includes this lineage in his _The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants_ (2004), pp. 530-1.
The sketchy and nearly-bereft-of- dates lineage provided by Surtees runs down to John Umfreville (1630-aft 1720) of New Haven, Connecticut in this fashion:
Gilbert de Umfreville, 1st Earl of Angus m. Elizabeth Comyn
Robert de Umfreville, 2nd Earl of Angus m. Eleanor de Clare
Thomas de Umfreville m. Joan de Rodham
Sir Robert de Umfreville = (mistress)
William Umfreville (illeg.) m. ---
William Umfreville m. ---
Andrew Umfreville m. ---
Roger Umfreville m. --- Luddington
Gervase Umfreville m. Katherine Digby
John Umfreville m. ---
John Umfreville (1630-aft 1720), of Ewell, Surrey and New Haven, CT

Any thoughts or information would be most appreciated.
Thanks.

3. 6. THOMAS DE UMFREVILLE, Knt., of Holmside and Wheatley, co. Durham, Whelpington and Alwinton, Northumberland, etc., younger son by his father’s 2nd marriage. In 1340, as “Thomas son of Robert de Umfreville,” he sued John de Herlawe, clerk, regarding accounts of money. He married JOAN DE RODDAM (or RODHAM), daughter of Adam de Roddam. They had two sons, Thomas, Knt., and Robert, K.G. [Deputy Admiral of England] He was never summoned to Parliament. He was granted the manor of Hessle, Yorkshire by his half-brother, Gilbert de Umfreville, Earl of Angus, in 1377. He was heir in 1379 to his full brother, Robert de Umfreville, Knt., by which he inherited the manors of Edmondsley and Farnacres, co. Durham. In 1381, at the death of his half-brother, Gilbert de Umfreville, Earl of Angus, he had livery of the castle of Harbottle and the manor of Otterburn, Northumberland by special entail. SIR THOMAS DE UMFREVILLE died 21 May 1387.

Subject: Digby question: Katherine (Digby) Umfreville (say 1575-aft.1641)

If anyone has any thoughts or information on the followng, I would be most grateful.
In my article "The English Origin of John Umfreville of New Haven, Connecticut," The American Genealogist 72 (January 1997), I established the patrilineal ancestry of New Haven, Connecticut settler John Umfreville / Humphreville (1630-al.1720). In so doing, it was discovered that John's paternal grandmother was a certain Katherine (Digby) Umfreville (say 1575-aft 1641), wife of Gervase Umfreville, of Ewell, Surrey.
I did not pursue Katherine (Digby) Umfreville's ancestry in this article, although the following bare facts are known:
1) KATHERINE DIGBY, born say 1575, died after 1641, probably at Ewell, Surrey, married about 1600 to GERVASE UMFREVILLE, born say 1570, died before 1634, probably at Ewell, Surrey. [TAG 72:16-17].
2) JOHN DIGBY, born about 1530, died after 1580, probably at London or at Ravenstone, Derbyshire. He married 12 November 1571 at St Stephen Coleman St., London to 3) URSULA HALFHIDE. [TAG 72:16-17; St Stephen Coleman Street PR; Middle Temple Records (1904), p. 81]
4) HENRY DIGBY, born say 1485, died probably either at London or at Tichmarsh, Northamptonshire. On 2 June 1526 in London, he was married to 5) MARGARET TRICE. [TAG 72:17, n. 14; Boyd, Percival, Citizens of London (typescript), # 41276; Harleian Society 25:5 (1887); P.C.C. Fettiplace; St Martin in the Fields PR]
8) BENJAMIN DIGBY, died in 1532 in the parish of St Dionis Backchurch, London, he married 9) KATHERINE ---. [P.C.C. Thrower; Vis. Norf.; Boyd, Citiznes of London, # 41276]
16) EVERARD DIGBY, died probably at Stoke Dry, Durham [Vis. Norf.; Boyd, Citizens of London, # 41276]
Thanks for you input
