I think your family dropped off the face of the earth! :)I searched for quite awhile and found nothing.
I did find them on the 1860 census, and they weren't in Highgate, they were in Franklin, Franklin, VT.
There are possible matches for their children in 1870, but none of them are living with parents, so its difficult to tell.
Are you sure they were still alive in 1870?Have you found them in 1850 New York to verify the dates/places?I took a look and this was what I found:
Nelson Clough
> 30/M/Farmer/New York
Mary Clough
> 30/F/New York
Samantha Clough
> 10/F/New York
Charles Clough
> 6/M/New York
Emily Clough
> 2/F/New York
So that gives you a name variation, another child and different dates to play with.
I'm sorry I couldn't locate them on the 1870.It's very peculiar!I tried every variation I could and came up with nothing. At the very least I expected to find Mary or Francis as young children, but didn't.
I also noticed, which you may have too, that as far as Soundex goes, Clow and Clough are very different.Clough will also bring up Cluff (and I checked Cluff as well).
I'd be glad to look again if you think of something else!Good luck, I've been there! :)
