Alabama fielded three regiments for the Spanish American War - the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Alabama regiments. Of these, the 3rd was an African American regiment. None of these three regiments saw service outside of the U.S. Losses in each regiment were fairly light (a total of about 45 men died out of about 3000 men in total from the three regiments).
Of course, he could also have served in the regular army, in the national volunteer regiments (U.S. Volunteers), or in the navy.
