Re: Pre- World War I Olaf Hoie in service
James, thank you for the information.I have seen that listing for Olaf in the 1900 census for Alaska. The age was right, as was Clark SD.
What confused me was that he was born in Norway, not at sea, as the census states. It also said his mother was German, but she was Norwegian.
Another discrepancy was that he immigrated in 1881, not 1876, the date stated in the census. They went first to LaCrosse, Wisconsin, then to Clark, SD.
The family never lived in Pennsylvania, although I suppose he could have moved there.
I think it really is him, as there are so many coincidences.I don't know how to account for the things that don't match.Maybe he was telling tall tales, or the census taker mixed up some of his information.
I would really like to know what happened to him after 1900.I am fairly sure he lived to his sixties....
I really appreciate any help you can give.
