Re: Zephaniah Nooe 3rd US Infantry, Capt White's Co.
I was able to get a copy of the Bounty Land Warrant application for Zpehaniah Nooe filed by his 3 sons when they attained legal age.
In the file there is a letter written May 22, 1832 on behalf of the sons that states "It appears from the Rolls of Capt White's Company (Capt. Hays G. White) of the 3rd Regiment Infantry to the 31st December 1813 that Zephaniah Nooe, a private enlisted the 20 April 1813 for During the War - Remarks "Confined" and it also appears from the Rolls of Discharge Men of the 3rd Infantry, that he was discharged on the 20th April 1815, having been paid in full including his 3 months gratuitous pay".
1) "Confined" I take to mean prisoner of war.So far I have not been able to find lists of American POW's other than Privateers or Navy personnel. Is there somewhere online or other that has these lists available?
2) "Gratuitous Pay" was paid when a soldier was wounded or disabled. Is there one repository for American Casualty lists for the War of 1812?
There is also another letter in the NARA file that was written March 2nd 1832 to Lewis Cass, then Secretary of War, that gives Zephaniah's military career in brief.Again stating that he enlisted in Capt Hays G. White's company of the 3rd Regiment Infantry in 1813 and "after serving in the Creek War at Pensacola and at New Orleans was killed after the Peace" (May 1815) "and before the reduction of the Army in 1815" (June 1815.
If the author of the letter knew this information about the death of Zephaniah Nooe, where would he have gotten it from?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.
