I was not "adopted" as a child. I was entering middle age when I encountered the Lakota culture. The sundances were outlawed for a long time, however, the feds have relented somewhat. They are no longer outlawed (at least to my knowledge)because of a federal law that was passed in 1988(?) or so that now allows us to pursue our own religious practices (at least to some degree). BTW, the story of Cynthia Parker and Quanah Parker is a great one. Quanah Parker was a great war leader and well as a peacemaker among your people. Does it strike you as ironic that the Lakota word for "whiteman" has nothing to do with skin color? I wonder if other native languages are similarly enlightened in that respect.
