More about Dec. 17, '44......And the ME- 262
One of Hitler's greatest hopes concerning the Ardennes Breakthrough weighed heavily on the performance of the new ME-262, the twin jet fighter. He assured his generals that his new fighter would sweep the skies clean of the 8th Air Force, thereby enabling the Wehrmacht a greater chance at defeating the Allied ground forces......it didn't work!
Had he put the ME-262 in play six months earlier with a sufficient number of planes and pilots, it may have been a different story. The plane was frightening! It could come straight up through our formations so fast that our gunners could not sight on them.As one gunner described a P-47 in pursuit of a 262..."It looked like a little fat dog chasing a rabbit!"Les
