54th Armored Infantry
You'll find little, if anything, on the web. The 54th Infantry was constituted in May 1917 and organized the following month. The regiment was assigned to the 6th Division in November and went to France where it earned two campaign credits. Inactivated October 1922. Assigned to the 7th Division March 1923. Reactivated October 1940. Reorganized and redesignated 54th Armored Infantry and assigned to the 10th Armored Division. Regiment broken up in September 1943 and reorganized thusly:
Regimental Headquarters and Headquarters Company were expanded and redesignated 54th Armored Infantry Battalion
1st Battalion was redesignated 61st Armored Infantry Battalion
2d Battalion was redesignated 20th Armored Infantry Battalion
(All the above remained elements of 10th Armored Division)
3d Battalion was disbanded
The battalions served in the European Theater, each earning three campaign credits (Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace & Central Europe). The battalions remained elements of 10th Armored Division while undergoing several reorganizations and/or redesignations.
Relieved from assignment to 10th Armored Division in 1957. Consolidated and redesignated 54th Infantry, a parent regiment under Combat Arms Regimental System. Elements earned fourteen campaign credits during the Vietnam War.
