Hi James,
The unit button you're asking about is called a Distinctive Unit Insignia, or DI. It is used to designate different regiments/brigades with a larger unit, and is still in use today. The symbol is called a fleur-de-lys.A number of units wore a version of the fleur-de lys, so without seeing the pic it would be hard to do an exact ID.However, the 12th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 2nd Division, wore a fleur-de-lys DI.No other unit in the 2nd ID wore a fleur-de-lys DI.
