The tests were conducted on Bikini Atoll in 1946, and they were real-serious-deadly.
They were preceded by the complete removal of all of the native population then living on Bikini Island.

I had just returned from MTO, and only know what I have read/heard, but it was an intense operation from all accounts.
One of my life long friends was a Naval officer-participant. I have seen him many times since that time, and other than normal aging and loss of most of his hair (genetic), he is the same nice fellow.
I guess that these tests were necessary as a deterent
in time, but they sure opened a bag of worms for humanity.
