If I read yourmessage correctly, your G/F survived the war, which means that perhaps there are discharge papers somewhere in the family, which will spell out his military experience, including campaigns, medals and awards.

As an aside, I was on the line above Florence when the US Fifth and British Armies started the final drive against the Germans. The 88th ID passed through my artillery position enroute to its attackposition below Bologna.
