Occupied Germany - Help?
I have tried the NPRC in St Louis, eventually got bare details of uncle's record (the fire, you know...though if they could find his unit, medals, dates of service and service number, surely there was more....)
Uncle served with 407th infantry (102nd) from June 6th 1945, eventually was reassigned to QM 4245 (don't know when)until discharge via Fort Dix late 1946. Have been to National Archives and read through material for 102nd and 407th, and believe that he was most likely involved in occupational duties: guard posts, road blocks, admin and guarding of POW and DP camps in Ohrdruf, then moved to Coburg, dealt with restoring civil order, as in the Landkries Gotha (nexp move)and then Deggendorf where "problem of DP camps was confronted..."
There do not appear to be as many websites with info re the administration of the occupation of Germany and aftermath of the war. Does anyone have any suggestions for further research in this specific area? According to the actual records, for example, the DP camp in Ordruf had over 30,000 people in it, but cannot find mention of it on the web...
The NARA experience in MD was excellent, by the way, though the information recorded by the commander of the QM was fairly useless - week after week of "381 enlisted men, 12 officers, no changes.."...the 102nd and 407th info was excellent.
