(07/31/2003) George E. Moden, M/Sgt. USAF (Ret.), age 83, passed away at home on July 29, 2003. He was born July 2, 1920, in Williamson County at the Community of Woodrow to Anton and Pearl Smith Moden. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1938, served in the 8th and 9th AF during WWII until 1945. He served in the 11th Bomb Wing in Ft. Worth, Texas, and Altus, Oklahoma, until he retired in 1959. After military retirement he worked for a short while at Frito Lay Plant in Austin, then began his second career working at the University of Texas, Civil Engineering Department at Balcones Ferguson Research Center where he retired in 1982. He is survived by his son, Michael A. Moden, of Kemah, Texas; daughter, Carol Patterson, and her husband, Jim; son, Patrick G. Moden, and his wife, Kathy, of Austin; daughter, Mariann Sumner, and her husband, Lonnie, of Austin; daughter, Norma Hunter, and her husband, Donnie, of Lockhart; daughter, Jo Ann Galbreath, and husband, Terry, of Austin; he is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Serving as pallbearers will be Randy Sumner, Donnie Ray Hunter, Rick Roberts, Randy Roberts, Merle Moden, Mark West and Jason Heck. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, 2003, in the Cook-Walden/ Capital Parks Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Friday, August 1, 2003, in the Memorial Chapel of Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home, with Pastor Randy Newberry officiating. The interment will follow in the Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
