A NINTH AIR FORCE SERVICE COMMAND UNIT,near Berchtesgaden, Germany; Sergeant Charles F. Hasenklever, of Albany, the "Gas Man No. 1", of the Eighth Air Force is now serving in Germany with a Ninth Air Force unit, the 492nd Air Service Group. Sergeant Hasenklever acquired the nickname "Gas Man No. 1" while a chemical warfare instructor in Clovis, N.M. The name carried over to England where Hasenklever flew as a voice intercepter with a B-17 crew of the 447th Bomb Group, and Eighth Air Force unit. So well liked and popular was Hasenklever with his flying crew, that the bomber in which they made their numerous missions over the continenet was named "Gas Man, No 1", with a likeness to Hasenklever painted on its nose.
