Re: Cpl. Oscar H. Barton, 395th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Divison
Greetings, Mark Black !
I can expand your profile on the 395th IR, 99th ID.
The unit was attached to III Corps on 9 Mar 45, for the drive across the Wied River, and for the duration of the war, for that matter.
22 March 45, Western Front.
During the night, III Corps (US First Army) begins limited attacks across the Wied.
23rd March 45.
In the First Army sector, 9th and 90th IDs widen their bridgehead eastof the river Wied, through which the V Corps has also passed.
(There is no mention of 99ID for this date)
24 March 45.
In the First Army sector the III and V Corps extend and
reinforce their bridgeheads.
..."the 3rd and 7th Armies have taken about 100,000 prisoners in the past weeks...".
I would have to assume that your cousin was KIA as a result
of counterfire during III Corps's barrage action the night
of 3-22 and morning of 3-23-45.
Sorry, but that is all I can come up with at the moment.
