Re: 159th Infantry Regiment
Thank you for your reply. The reason why I was inquiring about the 159th Inf. Reg. after May 1945 was because somewhere I read that 422 and 424Inf. Regs. were attached to the 66thInfDiv between 15 Apr 45 and 15 May 45 and then assigned back to the 106th ID.It seemed unlikely to me that the 106th ID would have 5 infantry regiments assigned to it— so, was the 159th reassigned to another division after the 422 and 423 returned to the 106th?
While the 159th returned to the USA in early November 1945, my father did not return until 23 December 1945.The information I have on him was that he was in the 63rd ID until November 1944 and then assigned to the 159th when it was still at Camp Callan, San Diago, CA in December 1944.In January 1945, the 159th was at Camp Swift, TX before departing for the ETO from NY in March 1945.
About a year ago I tried to contact Mr. Irvin J. Schmidt but was informed he had passed away.No doubt he was a source of a wealth of information.I am sorry I did not try to contact him earlier.
I wish I had my own copy of Stanton's Order of Battle WWII.The only copy available in this area is in the research section of the library on Ft. Wainwright, but the post isn’t always open to non-military personnel.
